Lionel ZW Transformer Restore / Rebuild Questions

Hello,

 

I am in the process of rebuilding / restoring several Lionel ZW transformers and I have several questions:

 

1. I need to replace the Bus Bar on one of the transformers (ZW-27). I buy everything from Jeff at The Train Tender but it does not appear that he stocks this item. Does anyone know where I might find one?

 

2. I also need to replace several bulbs. I was wondering if anyone has used these LED bulbs and what their thoughts are.

At $4 a piece they seem a little expensive but wondering if anyone thought they were worth it or not.

 

3. I have cleaned the case with a mild cleaner so the dirt and grime are all off but want to know if there is something I could use to polish them to make them look even better

I have polished transformer cases with Butchers wax.

 

I have serviced a fair number of ZW transformers, and rarely have encountered a burnt out pilot lamp. Just be certain to use the correct one. Most ZW transformers use a #51 six volt bulb. The later models use a #1445 18 volt bulb.
I have been told that many imported bulbs will not fit the transformer because the base is longer. I have old stock USA bulbs that I use. Don't know about the LED replacements.

 

It's a bit surprising to me that you need a bus bar. Typically they can be re-used, even if all the terminals have broken away.
