As long as there is at least 10-12 volts on the track, or ideally a bit more, LionChief locos should work fine.  You would not be able to control the loco using any MTH control system or transformer as LionChief operates using a fixed voltage via the included remote or the universal remote.  More recent LionChief locos also can be controlled using the Lionel app on any smart device using Android or Apple operating systems.

@Landsteiner,

It is unclear if @kwisor is referring to LionChief as specifically the first edition, or LionChief as a family, which includes LionCheif, LionChief Plus, or LionChief Plus 2.0. The later two revisions support conventional transformer control no issue.

Again, the "type" of locomotive has nothing to do with compatibility of the MTH Accessory Activator, 40-1028, mentioned. However, the MTH unit (manual linked above) does not specify that it works on DC track power supplied by the cheap inexpensive wall-wart power bricks included with some of Lionel's entry line sets. 3 rail o gauge is still standardized around low voltage AC as it has been for over a century.
