It's first time out of the box today and the headlights decide to call it quits. I've tried resetting it to factory and use the Aux 2 Button but nothing. What is possibly wrong with it?
thanks

did you hold down the aux2 to get the additional screen?
bigdodgetrain posted:did you hold down the aux2 to get the additional screen?
Did that and still got nothing
Mine also quit the second time I powered up. I did the same as you: reset, no luck; aux2, no luck, hold down aux2 for lighting screen pushed different buttons including the one for aux2 in number 2 position, no luck. I believe they have a problem.
My 1218 also repeatedly stalls while running for no apparent reason. Also you can only run at no faster than speed step 5 or 6. This new Flyer/pullmor steam setting is a big load of BS.
Lionel needs to do a change for those who bought one.

I agree, not delivered as advertised.
This is not sounding good at all.
Larry
You guys should march these back to Lionel for sure.
Garbage.
Should we all Email Lionel and ask them what is up with our locos?
https://www.lionelsupport.com/...y/warrantypolicy.pdf
I don't think they can't do anything according to their policy.
Sounds like a poster boy of a locomotive and reason no. 1 not to buy built to order.
You can register it under warranty yet on Lionel's Website...
Everyone send them an email or contact them through their website and state the issues, hopefully this will be resolved on Monday.
The writing on the bathroom wall is becoming more and more clear as to why Mike Reagan left so abruptly.
Nothing but problems and complaints the past few months with new deliveries. Pulling the rug over our eyes with new Legacy components that are not compatible with real Legacy engines. Parts assembled wrong and corners be cut...and "Talk to Us" says there is nof fix for many of these things.
My pre-order days are done until Lionel gets their **** together.

All in all despite stalling, the headlights dieing and the occasional air bubble between the reservoir and the smoke whistle hole, it runs like a champ and smokes like crazy
Well my GS4s looked great as long as I didn't open the cab vents.
I just got mine, but I haven't run it yet...im kinda scared to now. Does anyone have anything GOOD to say about this engine??

The sounds are nice
Mine was perfect right out of the box and it has seen a lot of run time in the last 2 days.

Lucky!!!
Well
I made a promise, so do not open until Christmas. So for what ever reason I'll try and stay optimistic. I bought 3 Lionmaster challengers last year with no problems.
We will see

The new 0-8-0 switchers have the same speed control system; Lionel calls it BEMC. It uses the back EMF of the motor for speed feedback. I'm guessing that the Lionel American Flyer locomotives use this system. Apparently, the latest version of Legacy electronics that use an encoder is too large for the 0-8-0, the Heisler and this Lionmaster Class A.
I have the 0-8-0, but haven't run it yet.
Taking my engine to the club tomorrow see if it's going to operate correctly tomorrow, if not I will be not happy and I'm hoping that LionelI'll get back to us why the engine is acting up and having these issues. I will keep you posted
Tim,
There's been a lot of pot stirring in this thread. It's time to calm the waters.
Fact #1. This engine runs different (faster) because there was no room for the Legacy encoder. Speed step 1 is normal.
Fact #2. The engine has the same sound chip as the Legacy Y6b. Amazing N&W hooter whistle.
Fact #3. The engine has whistle smoke w/ the option to run both the main and whistle together, separate, or off. Smoke output is superb.
Fact #4. If you're not happy with your purchase, (not delivered as advertised, functions don't work), send it back. This holds true with anything you purchase.
Fact #5. This is a different animal and Lionel has stated that and the reasons why it is. Aside from a normal repair, they're not going to "fix" the electronics that isn't broken.
I'm keeping mine. It runs great, smokes great, and it will be a show stopper on my high school classroom suspended layout.
"Lionel Legacy Lionmaster Class A"
This engine was not listed as a "Legacy" engine in the catalog.
Lionel has stirred their own pot..... we are just reporting the poison that has been coming out of it.
Shall we make a list of issues from.... lets just say the last 6-8 months of deliveries? You want examples? I can provide several. My voice will now speak with my wallet.... or lack there of!
Clearly Lionel has lost focus on their bread and butter. Mega Tracks, HO Polar Express, a new electronics package that came about because Legacy didn't fit, but the bread and butter of the company has become sour.
"...Lionel calls it BEMC. It uses the back EMF of the motor for speed feedback. American Flyer locomotives use this system."
....as do all Electric RR Cruise Commanders, and they always have. Dead reliable - I've installed 2 dozen in upgrades.
Not that your problems don't exist, and I know nothing in particular about the LM Class A, but this cruise control design is just fine. I much prefer it to the Odyssey and PS2/3 sensor/tach systems - especially relative to installation.
Unless you have one of the 0-8-0 switchers that runs like a jack rabbit, with no way to slow it down.
Anybody that's been buying Lionel products the last 10 years or so knows laidoffsicks posts are right on the money.
For the guys "sugar coating" the class a and the 0-8-0.The phrase" there are none so blind as those who will not see" comes to mind.
Both of these locos ran signifigantly better in their tmcc forms over decade ago.
"I expected incorrectly"....are you kidding??
If you dropped $900 on a refrigerator and it didn't have an ice maker like it was supposed to you wouldn't say that.
I'm not buying the "legacy doesn't fit" . IMO something else is amiss here. Jon z stated future loos like the mogul would not have the bemf electronics. Hmmm.
Maybe Lionel should have delayed or cancelled these locos until they had enough of the correct parts instead of throwing the bemf in and shoving them out the door.
Lastly ,Jon Zs apology of "my bad" leaves a little more to be desired.
This isn't an MTV reality show.
(remember when they stopped offering whistle steam"because it didn't sell any more locos". Then it magically reappeared.)
Mike R. was a regular on this forum. Updates ,announcements, you name it ( a gear fix for a Loco lonnnnng out of warranty)
He was the direct link between manufacturer and customer/hobbyist. If no one else did, at least Mike seemed like he gave a "hoot".
Ogr starts a manufacturers forum and Lionel is nowhere to be found.......
If your still interested in these locos in spite of all the "pot stirring", and you haven't purchased one yet. Do yourself a favor and be patient. Wait for the blowouts on these for $700 or less in the next 6-12 months.

Maybe that's why Mike is no longer with Lionel?
Ok, so today I took my Class A to our open house to run for the very first time. We run conventional. I'm pleased with this engine. It doesn't go as slow as Odyssey II, but it's smooth and holds its speed nicely. The sounds are fantastic. So much bass and great hooter whistle. Smoke output is alright. Ill see if I can adjust this with my remote. Whistle steam effect is pretty darn cool. Odyssey II would definitely make this engine better though.
I'm just waiting for Lionel's reply sometime this coming week and I will make the decision of keeping it moving forward.
And Doug is right they don't care about the legacy products anymore Diecast NASCAR, Mega Tracks and HO revival doesn't keep the customers in O gauge happy. Most likely this will be the last Lionel engine I buy,

You are correct, I just noticed that. Bad assumption on my part and probably others.
I can already tell you what they will say Tim. I got one of those emails from Lionel already. It's pretty much a form letter, they just change the name.
Screw your dealer and return it to them if you're not happy. Oh wait, it's used now... you're dealer don't want it.
You can send it to Lionel for repair, and maybe after the 4th time you'll get it back with wires hanging out of the front of it.... like another forum reported here with his VL BB. So Lionel clearly has more than one issue going on right now.
Money talks....people need stop pre-ordering BTO stuff now. I'll wait and pay a little extra AFTER I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I'M GETTING

I didn't preorder mine I waited a week after they shipped before I purchased mine. I listened to what other people say like you did above I knew what I was getting into with the hyper speed but the sounds sold me for some reason, should of waited longer.
If Lionel gives me a go bleep yourself letter, The Dealer won't take it back, I might as well send it to the Train Shack and have them figure it out.
Im sorry if everyone is upset but Lionel needs to wake up or they're going to be out of business.
Yup I am 100% behind stopping all preorders. In fact I don't plan on preordering one bit until Lionel learns to get a consistent product out of the door. They have not gotten a consistent product out the door where all locomotive and cars, for the most part, run like they should and operate like they should since 2009. Even at that time it was not that great with their product quality. I sent my E6 atlantic back 4 times. Do you think I'll be buying anymore Lionel until they get a hold of themselves?
Hate to break it to you life long Lionel fans, but the party is over. MTH doesn't have all the "nice" features, but you get exactly what was listed and if not MTH honors your payments and either refunds or alerts you well in advance of the delivery date of the product. Say what you want, but that's how you run a company and maintain the hobby by keeping customers happy.
I don't know about the claim that the Lionmaster Class A was not cataloged as Legacy, but the 0-8-0 was. If Lionel does not make it right (refund or modification) with those of us that bought it, then I am done with Lionel. As for those that suggest return it, I ask how? My LHS ordered it for me as a BTO. He doesn't want it in his inventory. Who do I return it to?????????????
Everything ran normal except for the headlight still not working and for some reason there is a big air bubble between the stack and the whistle steam which I kept blowing into it and nothing still I really don't know what is going on with my engine
Did you tap Aux2 and NOT hold it down? A tap if Aux2 will turn the headlight on and off. Just checking.
Other than that if you're not happy return it.

Marty and everyone, thanks for your help, no matter if I tapped Aux 2 or hold it down, nothing only the cab lights and marker lights will turn on and off not the headlight. I'm gonna wait to see what Lionel sends me as a response to the message I send them
Ok. I just saw everyone saying hold it down. Good luck. Keep us informed.
