I have a Lionel 6-38096 4-6-4 Celebration Series Hudson #773 that has very poor smoke output compared with my other Lionel and MTH steam engines.  It has to be run a long time  before it begins to smoke and then the smoke output is very low.  I've had the engine since new and it has always operated this way.  I received it after any warranty would have expired, so warranty coverage was not an option.  I run it using Z-1000 and GW-180 transformers using TMCC, so it is operating on 18 volts.  Any suggestions on what I can do to increase smoke output on this engine?

They were never great smokers from the factory, but a rebuild of the smoke unit and perhaps a replacement of the smoke resistor with a 20 ohm resistor will yield good smoke.  This is typically some of the steps I take.

  • Drill out fan intake hole to 1/4"
  • Enlarge stack output as much as possible
  • Replace wick with Lionel braided wick or equivalent and shred it in the bowl
  • Insure the smoke unit is firmly in contact with the wick but NOT totally embedded
  • Insure there is a clear air path from the fan chamber output port over the smoke resistor to the stack
  • Replace stock resistor with a 20 ohm smoke resistor

This usually results in much better smoke.
