Just asking about this since I am not a collector but a runner, there is starting to be Lionel stuff claimed as NIB from Madison Hardware showing up on Ebay. One is a 685 loco, no tender for a buck under a grand. Is this loco really worth $1000 by itself, or is the seller a bit off?

Without a tender its not worth that price IMHO.
If a 685 is worth that much, I'll sell mine with tender for $900. There are people on Ebay under the delusion that people will pay more if it came from Madison Hardware or even Sears. A 685 is a 685 no mater where is came from.
Not in my opinion and the box is not a brick. I bought at least two items from them that were mint in the box, Canadian National Alco and 6572 Railway Express car. I do not think coming from Madison increases the value. Do not want to turn this into a debate on Madison, but they were known to play fast and loose with some items like the postwar FMs.
If you want a remembrance of Madison, get one of Lionel’s postwar catalogs overstamped with the store’s info. Maybe $20 Mint. Really nice. Done.
There are a lot of dreamers on eBay. You need to look at the “sold” prices.
