I recently acquired a Madison Hardware Special Edition tinplate Lionel Backshop. I plan on using it in conventional mode. It works fine and has been rewired with additional lights that are on a separate circuit that allows the lights to operate without the other functions operating. This was the modification Madison Hardware added.

Does anyone know if Madison Hardware replaced the motherboards in all the backshops they modified?

Unfortunately the smoke unit will not work in conventional mode I am not sure why this is. I would like to make it operational or replace it with a MTH unit. Any advice would be appreciated.

Do you have all the manuals and addendums?

Here are links from Lionel:

Main Manual  (note, it is very important to read the addendums regarding errors in the hookup diagram!!!!!!!)

Motherboard swapping (you should not need to do this, and if you did, it is probably difficult if not impossible to find a motherboard at this point)

Addendum #1 (note: I'm pretty sure some info in Addendum #2 supersedes this info if the motherboard has been replaced)

Addendum #2 (indicates smoke can work in conventional as well)

Read through all of that if you haven't already.  Hopefully some things will be cleared up.
