I have an Alaskan Railroad switcher #8154.  I took the shell off and noticed that there is no light underneath, should there be?  My question actually is, where could I find the manual for this (if anybody doesnt know the answer to whether there should be a bulb or not)?

Thanks,
Mike

I am reasonably certain that your engine originally had a headlight bulb on the end with the marker lights.

Someone may have removed the bulb and socket for the following reasons:

The wires from the bulb socket getting tangled with the motor bracket, causing derailments.

Fear that the bulb would get too hot, and damage (melt) the cab. (This can happen).

While the exact bulb and socket may not be available, there are plenty that will fit.

Lionel has all sorts of manuals and repair information on their web site:

http://www.lionel.com/CustomerService/

Here is the instruction sheet:

http://www.lionel.com/media/se...ents/70-8659-250.pdf

If you would like to see the service material, download the parts 1-9 of the service manual (all in one download), and see page 1-4, titled: Diesel switcher with 3 position e-unit.

Hi, Mike.

I believe the 8154 NW2 should have a working headlight at the end of the long hood which is considered the front of this type of locomotive. The headlight assembly consists of a bulb mounted atop a bracket.

EDIT: I noticed Mr. Burfle was responding at the same time as me. In addition to the excellent information presented by him, there is a book which was published by Greenberg Publishing in 1992 titled "Greenberg's Lionel Modern Era Diagrams and Parts Lists: 1977 to 1992". It contains a comprehensive selection of diagrams and parts listings. If your roster has modern era equipment built during this period, it may behoove you to look for a copy of the book:

Mike:

If I had one, I'd just send it you but I don't have what you need. A gentleman by the name of Mr. Chuck Sartor is a regular poster on the forum. He has an extensive selection of parts and has assisted me in the past. He uses his actual name as his forum name so you should able to look up his e-mail information in his profile and contact him.

Good luck,

Bob

I took apart my SW-1 and cleaned the motor contacts tonight since I did it to all of my other engines and this is what I found.  The manual C W posted looks to be correct.  I'm going to try Chuck Sartor as Bob has suggested, to find this bulb.  If he cant help, can somebody point me in the right direction?  Everything is there, just not the bulb, as you can see from my pictures.

Thanks,
Mike

Wedge Bulb

Lionel uses the wedge type bulb in the standard gauge passenger cars.

Here's one from the Polar Express set replacement parts

Lionel Wedge bulb

I would try the Lionel first-higher voltage rating.

Good Luck-nice little engine.

Moonman,

So are you suggesting I look for the 18V first and if I cant find it, go for the Polar Express replacement?

Thanks,
Mike
