Can anyone suggest where I can find railroad maps for the north east region?

Trains magazine recently put out a special issue that is specifically rr maps. I found it at my favorite bookstore.
There are also a series of Railroad Atlases published by Steam Powered Videos, including one for the NE. My copy is from 1993, so these may be out of print.

Yes, the Trains Railroad Maps, Volume 2 is excellent. It will have more content than just the Northeast but highly recommended.
Another great resource is the USGS. They have a site that you can explore their historical topographical maps and download them. Many of these, dating back to the turn of the 20th century, have railroads marked out - even with the owner.

Another interesting site is historic aerials:

The site has maps starting in the 1930s. The site is free, but It costs to buy a map.
Also, there are free apps. "open railway map" that shows historical as well as existing railway lines. The ap is being updated all the time with with abandoned lines.
"us topo maps" is also another good app source.
