I have a Marx engine that would not reverse or move . disconnected the reverse unit and wired thru the coil to the brshes. the motor runs now but is very hot. any ideas???

You don't mention what you use for a transformer. It can make a difference.

Using a newer Lionel unit and a older ZW. would yhat make a dciffeence. Thought the MRC were not real sine waves.
You have to be very careful not to exceed 14-15V on a Marx motor. If you have over done it, damage may have already occurred.
1; Make sure everything turns freely. Make sure no debris is wrapped around an axle or gear shaft.
2; Make sure the screw at the base of the brush plate is tight making good contact. This is the ground.
3; Make sure the brushes are not excessively worn.

I should know better
Did use a higher voltage on a lionel transformer as a bench tester. Grew up with Marx and they don't like too much. Had changed the brushes as they wer way to worn.
