Hi,

I just picked up an Ives 1707. I really want to get the whole Ives 1700 set. The 1708 looks like it will be the most costly to acquire. I also had my eye on AF O gauge cars. How does the AF 3210 tank car compare in profile to the Ives 1700 series cars? I believe the Ives cars are 10 inches long, but smaller in profile than the Lionel 2800 series.

I appreciate the info.

George,

You can get the cars in Lionel or Ives livery and double your fun.

The 1708 was only made with Ives livery, and yes it can  be fairly pricey.

I think the American Flyer 3210 tank car will coordinate with the Ives 1700 series.  Let me see if I can dig out some examples to make a comparison.  Then again you could just make a train out of the variations of the 3210.

Good Luck

I tracked down the whole Ives set from different sellers. The 1707 arrived today. I don't think they are going to look as nice as Greg's set. Mine will be in a little worse condition. They are long compared to the 2800 series cars I have and sit lower on the track. However, my Lionel 2815 tank car can couple to them, and the size is OK. So, I don't think I will pursue an AF 3210 right now.

I also picked up a Lionel 1722 before I got the 1712. It's orange instead of red. The seller thought the litho had faded, but it is just a different color. He probably didn't realize Lionel made the 1722 in orange. It has copper journals, so I believe it is the (A) variation in the Greenberg vol II guide, which is the first Lionel version from the orange Ives caboose.

I also ended up with several other cars in various conditions, because I had to buy the Ives in a Lot with other cars. After I clean them up, I may post the extras on the For Sale board.

I will post pictures and videos once I receive them all and get them cleaned up and running.

Very cool Dave! I think the Ives in your picture is one of the older lithographed cars made between 1918 and 1925. It could be 100 years old this year!
