Just noticed in run 271 page 74 Menards advertising Lionel box cars.  Pictures look good and I might spring for some at $20 a pop.  Wonder what kind of cars these are, that is bottom of line "scout set" or more like the 64xx series?  Went to website

http://www.menards.com/main/c-...iteria1_facet=Trains

and on the reverse long side of what the OGR Menards boxcar pictures show, is a Menards logo or picture.  Which figures why the $20, but then if you are a Menards collector then you can add these in.  Of course modelers could obliterate the logo or paint over Menards ad.  And apparently each car is sequentially numbered so you can run a whole consists of same type different numbered cars.

Thanks Ralph.  The P&WV was bridge line RR in Western PA and that was their real logo, so I just decided to carry P&WV forward to Iowa as a fictitious Midwest division.  However the N&W bought them out and that N&W lines reached southern Iowa.  So using old Iowa 1950/60 transportation maps, I searched for a town that N&W passed through, and installed town name "Imogene" on the layout.  In actually Imogene was just wide place in road no RR activity, just rails passing through.

In reality, do these cars have die-cast trucks and couplers and pressed

steel or plastic shells?

From the product description:

"This O gauge resin boxcar features realistic details including a chassis with premium metal trucks and couplers. The boxcar also features opening side doors,"

Resin???  Hmmm.  Perhaps these are WBB knock-offs after all...  Particularly seeing that an equivalent  WBB car MSRP's at $69.95...

For $20 you're not getting a $60 car- what do you want??

This is a great opportunity to buy a huge amount and populate a railroad for pretty cheap. The minute that our local Menard's opens, I am there.

I also appreciate a national chain carrying model railroad stuff. After all, O gauge folks make up what, 3% of the population. They could easily devote that real estate on the shelves to a different product that would attract 20% of the population. Thanks Menard's for not forgetting us. Even Hobby Lobby, (who i support & shop at) doesn't carry "O-gauge" stuff.

A question was asked and I answered it based on available data.  I have no skin in the game because I'm not interested in the Menard's cars anyway.  The trucks alone are probably worth the 20 bucks.

There has also been some speculation as to the heritage of these cars, and I'm just adding my 2 cents, again based on available information.

But, the only way we'll know for sure about construction and possible heritage is when the cars are released.

Rusty-
I re-read my reply, I didn't mean for it to come across as snide- hope you didn't take it that way.
I don't have the cars or a local store in my area yet. I hope to have both soon. From what I've seen, the $20 PRR boxcars would go great in our temporary community layout we build in our town hall each December. We had a Pennsy line go through our town, and for $20 a pop, if they're available, we can put together a pretty nice consist for a moderate amount of money. Scale/near scale/semi scale it doesn't matter to the kids that come to our display. They just want to see engines filling the place with smoke pulling 20 or 30 cars. That's the wow factor for them.

The Menards cars won't fit the bill for everyone, but they will for us.

Every box car on the website does have the Menards logo on it but it is not as large and as obvious as on the C&NW car.  If you look to the right of the door near the bottom on all but one of the cars it says “BUILT BY MENARDS 2014” in 3 lines.  You may have to enlarge it to read it.  The word “Menards” is in the form of their logo.  The exception is the orange NP box car which has that same lettering to the left of the door.

Bill,

The built by Menards is acceptable compared to the splash on the CNW car. It's apples and oranges.

Bob, I agree that the small logo in the "Built by" marking would be just fine.  I hope that's all it is and really look forward to seeing these cars when they come out.

One other thing: the links to the 2 weathered cars mentioned in earlier in this thread are no longer any good.  Anyone have any details about these?  Anyone grab a pic?  Thanks

The cars look pretty nice. I really like the Santa Fe boxcar.

Are these WbB boxcars, or a copy of WbB boxcars? The First-Timers bar was a copy of a Bar-Mills kit, so I'm guessing these are copies of Williams boxcars. Obviously, I don't know, but I'm curious what WbB thinks of this?  Perhaps the Williams cars were used as pre-production samples, like MTH does with ho models in their catalog, or Lionel did in the 1950's with the GMC switcher.

Guess we'll know when the cars are released.

The Williams box cars are made from the original AMT tooling that was later used by Kusan, Kris Model Trains and Frank’s Roundhouse.  Based on their stated dimensions and other characteristics unique to those molds, if the actual Menards cars match the photos and the descriptions on their website, then these cars will be made from that same tooling which has been OWNED by Williams since the 1990’s.

There’s been lots of speculation about these $20 box cars on here but let’s be realistic and not raise our expectations too high.  The old adage “you only get what you pay for” suggests that these cars can’t possibly have the same quality as Williams or Lionel cars with such a big difference in price!  Even the big well-known discount train dealers markdown those $69.95 MSRP Williams cars to only about $40.

So will these cars really be made by Williams or will Williams merely provide blank bodies to be decorated by a third-party for Menards?  IMO Williams would be stabbing their existing dealers in the back if they produced these cars for Menards to sell at such low prices.  What do the Williams dealers who read this Forum know about this offering?

We may not know the answers about these cars until someone on here buys one and has it in his hands to compare it with a known Williams car.  Based on the delivery schedule announced on the Menards site, that won’t be until very late May at the earliest.

OTOH with York week upon us maybe we could get an answer from an insider and end all of this speculation.  The question of who made these cars for Menards could be asked at the Bachmann Booth next week at York.  Unfortunately I can’t be at York this time to ask them in person.  Can anyone going to York ask that question and report back to us?  While you’re at it, ask them about the status of the E-Z streets turnouts?

I think it's a great match.  At 34, I missed Lionel's heyday in the '50s, but I do know Lionel and hardware stores went hand-in-hand back then.  And what a perfect combo... your customer buys a Lionel train set, some extra cars and track, and oh, ...let's pickup some plywood!  Oh, and wire, screws, bolts...  Menards was unheard of in the St. Louis area until the last few years.  Now, their stores are popping up all over the place.  They just opened one in Manchester, MO, a western suburb of St. Louis, and are now building one right down the street from me in Richmond Heights.  Other stores are also being built in the area.  They are a welcome addition to St. Louis, which is flooded with Lowes, Home Depots, and ACE, which all sell basically the same thing at the same prices.  Time to shake things up a bit and, who can complain about picking up a box of trees or a $20 boxcar every time you need a pack of lightbulbs?
