That's right! Wednesday is back! We are getting into a Halloween mood this week, and Midweek Photos wants you to share what Halloween, Fall or other real world trains you might have seen lately.
There are many types of Fall festivals going on, and in Scranton, PA, there was a Bonfire at the Iron Furnaces on October 17. The furnaces are a huge remnant of the once thriving steel works that dominated the city until 1902.
The next day, Steamtown ran one of their longer excursions possible by running to Delaware Water Gap. The early departure means low sun angles on the train. This trip was led by Alco units RS3 1554 and C420 405.
The train departs downtown Scranton by traveling through the University of Scranton campus.
Six days later, October 24, Steamtown runs to East Stroudsburg for the Fine Arts and Fine Crafts fair. The RS3 handles the 7 car train solo.
The interesting thing about these trips is that you leave Scranton in the peak of the foliage season, enter near winter-like conditions over the mountain, and then arrive at the peak of the foliage season on the other side.
The green building in the center is the Dansbury Depot, which served as the train station for East Stroudsburg and Stroudsburg for the DL&W, Pennsylvania RR and the Delaware Valley RR. it was re-located across the tracks to this location in 2011.
The East Stroudsburg tower on the left dates to 1908. It is considered the last standing wooden tower on the DL&W. Several concrete towers remain.
The train pushes down to Gravel Place to prepare for the return to Scranton.
All set to go. Only a few passengers left to board.
Thank you all for participating in the MidWeek Photos this year. Remember, the year is coming to a close, so we will have a Year in Review the beginning the Wednesday after Christmas. Keep this in mind while you are out on the train or on the chase.
