Happy Wednesday, everyone!  Today is the beginning of Spring, and the railroads and museums are waking up with activity, and schedules rolling out.  While the buzz about the Big Boy 4014 and J-611 are dominating the rail news these days, a lot of little moves are grabbing attention, too.  This past week, Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton, PA saw a few items on the move and in the sun.  The fun began this past Sunday.  IMG_0403

To take care of heating repairs in the roundhouse, a few of the steam locomotives were taken outside.  The work will be finished sometime on Friday, they tell me.  So the workers could take care of things on Monday, Grand Trunk Western 4-8-2 no. 6039 was rolled out.  It sat on the table until around lunch time today.

The locomotive making the switch moves is F3 no. 663, owned by the Tri-State Chapter of the NRHS. It has been at Steamtown since 2009.

After placing 6039 in the roundhouse, the F3 pulled Nickel Plate Road no. 759 out.  The turntable was needed for more moves, so out they went.

Over the turntable...

And then out of the turntable plaza.

With this out of the way, the crew took lunch.

One half hour later, they were on the move with a track mobile to haul the tender of Baldwin Locomotive Works no. 26 from her resting place for the winter months, roundhouse stall 14.

Being pushed into stall 16, it was only a few feet and one building away from its mate, the engine side of Baldwin no. 26.

The engine sits on the same track, but in the locomotive shop's back shop.

As things were dying down, it was time to push no. 759 back on the turntable.  This is a view from the east.

The 1:00 Sun looks about the same on the West side.  Here she will sit for a few days.  Baldwin no. 26 is expected to be back under steam by April 20, and will likely be steamed up a few days early for setting the safety valves and some steam tests.  The season is almost ready to roll.

A bit late for midweek, but...

1897 Baldwin 4-4-0 Detroit & Lima Northern #7 received its first load of coal and water for the 2019 season yesterday. It had a successful test firing today and will likely be out soon for some running tests in the next week or two prior to the opening of Greenfield Village on April 13th for the 2019 season.

Me and my son visited Greenfield Village last fall and road behind the #7 several trips.  We spent the day photographing her and all the railroad stuff around the village.  One of my favorite places to visit!

Glad to see you had fun!  We certainly have some unique and locomotives that we run on a regular basis.  There's not a whole lot of 19th century steam locomotives out there that are in regular service for 7 months out of the year.
