Ladies and gentlemen!  Welcome once again to the Midweek Photo scene.  For this week, I have only  a few more photos of Steamtown trains in and around Scranton.  Here we go:

This past Friday, May 20 was a perfect day for chasing a train.  Here is the 1:30 "Scranton Limited" train backing on to Bridge 60 at the Steamtown National Historic Site.

Now, moving forward. to the right of the locomotive, you see a DL&W trackside shanty ( in green) and the Central RR of New Jersey freight depot (in red brick.)

And away she goes....

On Saturday, the 21st, the weather was not so nice.  A large number of boy scouts showed up at Steamtown to take part in a Camporee where they could earn a number of scout badges.  I am not sure if the hand car is part of the badge, but it kept the 300+ scouts busy in between seminars.

I managed to catch the excursion departing Steamtown at 4:00 PM.  C425 No. 2452 led the train out of Scranton heading to Tobyhanna State Park, about 25 miles away.  The park is where the scouts held the camporee.

That's my contribution for the week.  Enjoy your upcoming holiday weekend.  Once again, please contribute any train photos you  may have grabbed in the recent past.  Summer is on its way, and with it come longer days perfect for catching a train or two after work.

I was on my way home from my son's house in Haslet, Texas, (following the old Santa Fe, of course, as far as Krum) when I came upon two ten-unit consists of brand-new GE's sitting outside the plant.  The area between the highway and the railroad was 100% mud, so the poles had to remain in the photo.  Beautiful, spotless new locomotives.IMG_4111

You are lucky to have something that like close enough to get to.  I used to have UP steamers within a day's drive, once upon a time..........

The daily temperatures here have gone from the low fifties to suddenly hanging around the eighty degree mark.  That usually means the jet stream has shifted.  We're also about a month away from the summer solstice, meaning it doesn't get really dark until nearly ten o'clock.   The warmth and lack of dark, and weather in general have really put a damper on me the past week.   My buddy with the RCPE advised me a w/b was on duty in the middle of the state about 5pm on Saturday, so I headed out there with hopes of getting some nice Western sunset shots.  The train kept being put off again and again, and it finally was set to leave about 10pm.  By the time I would have followed it west at 10 mph and took a shot or two, that would have me getting home just before dawn.     I cut my loss and went after an e/b leaving Huron SD, which was along the way home.  I  caught it at Cavour SD. I still think of the RCPE as the "Heartbreak Railroad."   It's very hit & miss.   A day later the weather had changed and the wind was a steady 30-45 mph.  This created dust storms as the dry dirt from the plowed fields became airborne.   Not a nice day for chasing trains, but you can't be choosy out here.  I managed a couple up on the old MILW Highline in SD.   So, for the two days I ended up with three OK shots, but drove something like 800 miles to get them.  Not a good return on the "investment" this time.

1. RCPE e/b passing through Cavour SD

2. BNSF w/b manifest near Ortley, SD.  Train had eight six-axle engines.

3. Same train leaving Groton, SD.  Note the exhaust plume going 90 degrees sideways due to the 40 mph south wind.

4. It's the time of year to step carefully in the grass.

Updated 2 seconds hope this is acceptable here> I took this late this afternoon; they are of a switchman shanty in Plymouth Twp Pa along the former D&H line, or DL&W. It's in very poor condition, the victim of several vandals, but it is not beyond repair. There is a memorial site about a mile south of this location commemorating the Avondale Mine disaster. This would fit in well with the memorial.

A couple of shots of everyday railroadin'

First, these two locomotives have just received a light and are moving back to their train,

"on hand signals", they  are on the eastbound main, and will move thru the interlock

to the westbound main and take their train, Q317, west. They have set off cars in the

west Keyser WVa CSX Yard.

The second photo is of the lead locomotive parked with a string of coal loads, across from

a local supermarket.

A little humor, wonder if anyone else sees a big GE as a "Giant".

I wonder if the 911 ever  went into emergency?
