Greetings to one and all!  Midweek Photos is a chance for us to share our collection of photos of railroading in the real world from near and far.  This week I chose far   This past weekend was the final weekend of operations for Virginia Museum of Transportation's steam engine 611 for 2016, at least on a main line. The 1950 Norfolk & Western  4-8-4 shone brightly, even if the weather was not always accommodating. Trains ran on Saturday and Sunday out of Manassas, VA to just outside Front Royal.  This first post is of the train action when I arrived on Friday, June 3.

Manassas has a beautifully preserved station.  If anyone is surprised by the somewhat large size of it for a small town, it was a segregated section with a black and white waiting room, although no one uses it as a waiting room much these days.

While waiting for a train from Washington to arrive, I was surprised to see Amtrak come into the station.  The surprise is based on looking at the VRE schedule, and not expecting additional trains.  I was already aware of Amtrak serving Manassas.  I took the Cardinal to Charlottesville several years ago.

Another surprise was this NS coal train coming through.  I'm told there is not much freight traffic on this route.

Next on the parade was the arrival of the VRE commuter train from Washington DC.  A few friends were on a tour of the White House earlier in the day, and took the train back to Manassas.

There were several rainbow sightings due to the on and off nature of the rain that day.

This is my first post for today.  My computer is very slow in uploading photos, so I'll hand the thread over to you, wherever you are, to add to the action.

Thanks as always to those who participate on this thread.  Some weeks are busier than others, but all of them are interesting.

Now for the steam action. Saturday, June 4, there was a morning excursion at 8:00 with expected return by noon to arrive back in Manassas for a train festival.  To reach the station, the train pushed back from the yard to reach a switch, where the train then pulled forward on the main station track.  The rail in front of the first photo is part of a wye, and the line that would go to Front Royal.

Off to the station.  Going ahead of the train, we stopped at Delaplane to catch this bit of action.

And this spot, near Linden, not long before arriving at the wye in Front Royal, which I believe they call Riverton Junction.

Let's visit Middletown station on NJ Transit's North Jersey Coast Line. The station facilities were completely upgraded as part of the extension of electrification from Matawan to Long Branch in 1988. In the following images, we see several views of the station building followed by eastbound and westbound trains.

Now for some of the return to Manassas action.  This is the train climbing uphill outside of Front Royal. The train did not go into town, but rather to a yard along the Shenandoah River, where it was wyed.  The final car on the train was Washington DC Chapter's Dover Harbor.

And another nifty location, by an old train station.  There were several on this 40 mile line.  I can't remember the name, since we jumped out of the car just in time to catch the train. (Edit:  This is Rectortown)

Another close call, roaring through a town called The Plains.

This is approaching a road crossing, I believe in Gainesville.

A triumphant return into Manassas.

The train had to wait in de-training riders due to the arrival of Amtrak's Cardinal.  Busy place.  That does it for me this week.  Thank you for viewing.  I will have the Sunday photos up next week, and maybe a few others, too.  See you next Wednesday.

This gentleman was one of the crew of the DOVER HARBOR when NKP 765 met R&N 425 at Jim Thorpe

Decided to try some rail photography - with the 611 in the D.C. area over the weekend, there could not have been a better excuse! Here she is, threading her way downhill through Thoroughfare Gap, on her way back to Manassas.

Not too bad for a point-and-click camera. I could do without the lens flare, though.

This one, not so great! But I've decided to keep it. It's "artsy"

Here is Casper Wyo on 6-5-16.  Yard engines on guard.  Mainline action.  North Platte  River at bank full. Comes north from Colorado, past the Snowy Range, but now turns southeast which the RRs follow to their advantage.  Finally 20160604_202727[1]20160605_065646[1] what you would see from the cab.  20160604_202439[1]20160604_203722[1]
