Good morning!  I hope all of my friends had a nice Independence Day, or Canada Day, or Summer Holiday.  I'm not sure how global OGR is, but I want to cover the bases.    I want to thank Kent in SD for keeping Midweek Photos going while I was away in Delaware.  I tried to post via my phone, but the mobile version of this website is not as easy as being on a desktop.  I was away for a week at the National Railway Historical Society's RailCamp in Newark, DE.

RailCamp is run twice a year, once in Newark and another time in Tacoma, WA.  24 teenage boys (no girls this year) discover all aspects of railroading.

The first day of operations is in the Amtrak training center in Wilmington, DE.  We met several of the leaders of the National Railroad Passenger Corp.

Amtrak VP of Operations, Chris Jagodzinski, instructed the kids on all aspects of a locomotive.  A P42 in this case.  The airlines, brakes, coupler, plow and other apparatus are shown.

DSC_5231

The boys also had a chance to get in the cab for a few minutes.

DSC_5241

There is also the chance of railfanning, when a freight or passenger train rolls by.

DSC_5243

Also in Wilmington is a dispatcher training module.  The campers get a chance to route an imaginary train through the switches.

DSC_5246DSC_5247

The engine simulators give the campers a chance to run on a stretch of track, dealing with some obstacles and the various controls that a locomotive has to offer.

After dinner, we take the boys to Newark's train station where they safely view the passing parade of trains.  Septa, Amtrak and sometimes Norfolk Southern trains take this very busy section of the Northeast Corridor.

And that is all on Monday.  I am going to get some coffee to post some photos of Tuesday's activities.  Please take this thread and run with it.  Make it your own.  Have a great summer, whether trackside or poolside.

Happy to oblige.  It's a team effort, after all.  I'll add--great shots of stuff we don't normally see.  I do have a few shots this week.  Most are from the roll of film I started a month ago in Seattle and finished up in South Dakota last week.  The camera was a Nikon F3T with 1980s vintage AiS lenses, Kodak Ektar film.  I'm not entirely happy with the color balance, but I'm learning as I go.  It's my favorite camera to use--I like the solid feel and the mechanical sounds it makes.

1. Flat Iron Building, Seattle WA.  I was looking for the monorail that's supposed to run through downtown, but never did find it.  The Flat Iron building was pretty cool though.

2. Ree Heights, SD.  Abandoned elevator, nearly abandoned town.  This is one of  my favorite little elevators!  Train is an e/b RCPE  (Rapid City, Pierre, & Eastern.)  Track is former C&NW, once almost abandoned.

3. Crooks, SD.  The Madison local appeared at twilight, and it was tough to catch with ISO 100 film!  I know the conductor and he came out and waved.  The train was only going 10 mph.

Some B&W pics from my trip to Colorado this past week. The Santa Fe Navajo Observation car from the first 1937 streamlined Super Chief at the Colorado Railroad museum in Golden. The car still looks to be in good shape for being 80 years old! The vestibule pics are from a Rio Grande Ski Train passenger car.

Some more pics from the RailCamp Amtrak visit. These were on the Tuesday visit to Wilmington, DE shops. DSC_5297

This car body of a "cabbage" was lifted by the over head crane just in time for our group to see it.

DSC_5303

One of the ACS64 units was open for them to explore and take their photos. DSC_5314

From inside the shop, they also had a glimpse of former stars of the rails such as the AEM7 seen here.

DSC_5315

And a GP38 used for switching in the yard, moving dead equipment and some MOW gear.

DSC_5317

After lunch, we headed to CNOC and CETC to learn about how the Amtrak people keep the trains moving on the line.

DSC_5318

CNOC is very intense.  People there get distracted by photos taken inside, so I only got one or two of the campers.

DSC_5322

At CETC, the atmosphere is a bit more calm.  Each cubicle here deals with one or two Amtrak trains, following them on the host railroads.

Group photo before we take a train to Washington DC.

We're blazing the train to Camp Kitchi Goomie.  Up the stairs to the Wilmington train station.

DSC_5331

This looks interesting.  High hood Geep on the Northeast corridor?

DSC_5333

Here is the other side of the train as it passes.  Empty flats being carried to the Wilmington shops, we believe.  GP38 performs the task.

DSC_5337

As one train fades into the distance, a regional comes to the station.

DSC_5341

Now an Acela, then another regional, then another regional.... Coming and going.

DSC_5342DSC_5353DSC_5355

Inside the old waiting room, which seems to be just a party space anymore.  People wait downstairs inside the building.

DSC_5365

Waving as our train arrives at the station.

DSC_5371

From Baltimore to DC half of us got a chance to ride the theater car, watching the track workers and passengers on the platforms.  The other half watched from Wilmington to Baltimore.

DSC_5373

The first order of business upon arrival in DC was to tour the station.  An amazing structure. of course, it is so big, you can't tour every aspect, but we got some terrific shots.

DSC_5376

DSC_5378

The next spot to go to was Tower K.  We got to see a few trains on the walk out there.

DSC_5380DSC_5383

Washington is host to MARC trains going to Baltimore, along with VRE trains to Manassas and Fredericksburg.

DSC_5386DSC_5387DSC_5393

VRE is short for Virginia Railway Express.

DSC_5394

We also toured the Railway Express Office building, which Amtrak is taking over more space in so it can integrate services better.

DSC_5407

We also got a demonstration of the importance of the K9 patrol at the station.  This is an explosives sniffing dog.

DSC_5410

I haven't seen this before.  A statue of A. Philip Randolph, who was at one time president of the Pullman Porters union.  He and the union supported Martin Luther King (among others) in the attempt to end racial segregation in the US.
