Hello! Facebook tells me that it is National Photography Day today, and forums like this are a perfect way to show our talents with the camera. A4FCABA0-A503-4A4B-9065-A2042FB66A84
This past weekend, I took a quick trip to Jim Thorpe, PA. Steam power has returned to the Reading & Northern Railroad’s Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway operation. The steel bridge you see was originally the Central RR of New Jersey. It spans tracks of Norfolk Southern’s former Lehigh Valley Railroad. 440E8A18-0360-4AB7-99B8-88C4D9136316

The locomotive used that day is this 1928 Baldwin, a 4-6-2 numbered 425. She is painted in blue, reminiscent of the CNJ’s Blue Comet steam engine.

Here we see the train stopped at the train station. The town was originally called Mauch Chunk, and was the headquarters of the Pennsylvania operations of the railroad.

Another notable unit is this SD50. This weekend debuted the “Fast Freight” look that about 10 diesels on the Reading & Northern will be wearing.
That’s all for me. Please feel free to add a train picture or two. You know we want to see them.

Illinois Central at the Canadian National Railway Terminal, Pontiac Michigan

Sunday August 16th & Monday August 17th, 2020

1 Illinosis Parked F150

When I was out and about and this parked Illinois Central caught my eye on a Sunday afternoon. This is the first time I have seen this loco. I was wondering why it was in Pontiac.  The red F150 is my ride. Well, here is the story. In 1998 Illinois Central was purchased by the Canadian National Railway for approximately $2.4 billion. The CN is the owners of the Illinois Central equipment and rails.

My fellow Michigan rail-fanners tell me they think it may go to the CN shop in Ferndale, Michigan or London Ontario for a new paint job. I will play detective.

2 Conductor debarking

I came back on Monday and the Illinois’s Central #3108 was hard at work.  The conductor is debarking the cab.

3 Throwing switch

The conductor is throwing a switch.

4 Back to tower

The conductor is giving track orders to the engineer.

5 Code 7

3108  conductor calls a code seven.

6 Front End

Back on the south bond siding.

Hope you found these CN photos interesting and hope to see you out rail-fanning and posting your photos here.

Mendota, Illinois this Past Sunday!

I especially liked the photo of 3181. If I am not mistaken, it is/was one of the GP50s Burlington Northern bought in the brief transition era when 3-man and larger crews were still the rule, but cabooses were being phased out.

My final railfanning outing this summer before classes resumed was last week. Word came down through the Pittsburgh Line railfanning group that privately owned PRR 10-6 sleeper Catalupa Falls would be making a run westbound on the Pennsylvanian, so I set out to catch the train arriving into downtown.

A look at the 5-foot tall PRR Keystone that still adorns the late 1940s trainshed. A rumor was started by the AltoonaWorks Facebook page earlier this year that the trainshed would be coming down as part of NS's bid to make the entire Pittsburgh Line accessible to doublestacks, and I was fortunate enough to catch the edifice as the sun set.

An unexpected surprise was seeing Sperry Rail Services doodlebug 136 parked on Track 2A in front of the former PITT tower. The contractor has been working their way east and west across the NS central tier for much of August.

43 arrived a half-hour behind schedule, with Catapula Falls tucked in behind the P42DC. This indicates that the car was on the rear of the train when it departed New York, since the P42 is added at the opposite end of the train from the electric that takes the train as far as Philly (check out my YouTube channel for a video of the engine change).
