I saw that the Reading Crusader was the feature engine for the 2014 National TCA Convention next year in Philadelphia. I have a set made by Weaver in the late 1990's with a brass Crusader engine that had been upgraded to PS2. I also had a set of the 20" aluminum passenger cars that Weaver did for the set. As you may know, the Reading Crusader trains had 2 observation cars and the tender had a shroud that enveloped the end of the car. That way, on the runs from Philly to New York, they only had to turn the engine around at the end of the run, not the entire train.

Well, the passenger cars were sort of typical 1990's cars. They had the bulbs on the bottom floor, no seats and dark green windows. The dark green windows were prototypical and I wanted them to remain. However, I got seats from Gary at Weaver, LED lighting from Jack Pearce and people from somewhere. I then took the first car apart and realized that this job was way beyond my capability, patience, skill or whatever.

I immediately thought of my friend Alex. And I just got the cars back from him. They are magnificent. Thank you Alex !!!

Pictures are attached, but I must say that they really don't do the set justice. Mainly because of my photographic skills. However, I hope you enjoy them.

Have a great thanksgiving,

  Gerry

Hi Gerry, Don, Alan, Dave, and Marty thank you for the kind words.

There's a bit of a good story with this project,Gerry don't sell yourself short hear, when Gerry opened one of these car's up and tried to put the interior seating inside, they actually don't fit. They are actually a bit too wide and you can't slide the body back over the chassis too reassemble them.

So what I had too do was cut the interior's right down the middle and shave off 1/8 of an inch from each side, then I was able too install them 1/8 away from the left and right side. So now I was able too slide the bodies right over the chassis with no problem. I had too leave a space down the middle (which cannot be seen) so I was able too run the lighting wires from back to front.

If you look closely you can see the 1/8 inch space on each slide to allow the bodies too slide through.

Thanks,

Alex

Great job on a great train.  I have the K line Crusader passenger set and was wondering how they compare to the Weaver ones?   Supposedly the K line cars have the correct interiors but there are no people.  That will be one of my projects to add people.  I am using the MTH Railking Crusader engine to head the consist.   How does the Weaver engine compare to the K line engine?  I did not know the dark green windows were prototypical either.  The K line set does not have those.

The Weaver is a brass scale engine. I think it's really beautiful, but have never directly compared it to the K-Line.

I don't either could have "correct" interiors because the seat backs in those old trains were hinged and you simply reversed them when the train went in the other direction. And since the cars were frequently underutilized, you usually had seatbacks in both directions randomly.

Your consist looks great. The main things about this stuff is simply to enjoy it.

Gerry
