Modeling an O scale "upside down"Pratt Truss style railroad bridge
The Pratt Truss style railroad bridge is very commonly used for single track railroad bridges. In some instances where track clearance is important the bridge is "inverted" so that the supporting structure is below track level. This allows operation with extra tall or extra wide railcars such as Schnabels and double stacks. The inverted design also allows for additional "cross members" to be added for added strength.
A photo shows a 17-1/2 inch long plastic Pratt style bridge structure that will be custom built into a single track "inverted" bridge using plastic and wood shapes.
Some photos of a typical prototype Pratt bridge are also shown. The last photo shows a similar prototype "upside down" bridge.
