I have a Lionel boxcar 6-27271 (B&O). I want to remove the shell. I removed the screws on the bottom of the car but it seems something is holding the ends of the car which won't come free. Is there a trick to removing the shell?

I finally figured it out. There was a screw under each truck (accessible through a hole in the base) that holds the base to the shell. Once I removed them I still had to pry the shell out.
I'm at the same place you were. I found the two screws under the trucks, then I discovered another two in a deep hole near where the screws had been. I'd rather not destroy the boxcar, but cannot seem to dislodge the body from the undercarriage. Can the bottom rails be removed from the doors?

Yes, you have to pull the bottom rails after the 4 screws are removed. Give them a little push from the backside to dislodge and avoid breakage.
Thank you. Got it at last.--T.
