Certainly not easy to do any railfanning in the vicinity, let alone wave at the engineer on this one:

Some history in link:

"The Pamban Railway Bridge, which connects the mainland with the Rameswaram Island, was constructed in 1913. The 93-year-old bridge is one of the major attractions for tourists visiting from all over the country."

jay jay,

I did not realize that the bridge will be 100 years old next year until you mentioned it. Nice to share a post with you and others on this forum!

Like I mentioned before,I have not been to and stayed on a site for that long (almost 3 years now). My wife says I am too full of energy and need to sit still. So this forum allows me to surf in so many ways and really provides a distraction because I get to read about and SEE interesting things in many countries! Basically trains take one virtually everywhere on the planet!

Apparently the Pamban Channel is quite a dangerous crossing for ships because it is so narrow.

According to this site here:

"More than 10 ships – cargo carriers, coast guard ships, fishing vessels and oil tankers – pass through the bridge every month. ...until recently, the two leaves of the bridge were opened manually using levers by workers."
