Hi

I was wondering if anyone made a MTA diesel engine? I did see the MTH 30-2273-0 and 30-2773-1 which I believe used a NW2 diesel engine & PS-2.  I have also seen the RMT diesel engine not to crazy about it.  I have looked around but did not see anything can some one point me in the right direction.

Hello Kris --

Well,  it has never been produced in O-Gauge by LIONEL nor MTH trains.  Nor in HO Scale that I recall.  I have scratch built my own older series  MTA GE-50T Diesel Loco in O-SCALE and I HAVE ATTACHED PHOTOS of it BELOW:

I think one or two other modelers I know of may have also scratch built one.  Here are a few photos below of my locomotive  on my EL and in my Layup yards.  So the only way to have one is to make it yourself, at this time.  I made mine about 25 years ago.

Here is a link to my video of it running in a work train on my You Tube Account - "New York City Model Transit System"

And here is a link to my FLICKR photo ALBUM of photos of all my work cars, work trains and locos, etc., both on my EL system and in the layup yards and repair shops

Dear Joe F

Thanks for the information I though I might have missed something. Also thanks for the links and the pictures very nicely done. I was also think of taking a NW2 or something along those lines using an older model and repainting it make it look like a MTA maintenance engine. When I got to York April I will have this on my shopping list.

Only MTH cookie cutter non accurate NW’s were marketed.

Unable to get MTH to do one. Not enough sales activity on subways to offset tooling. Guess they don’t use 3d printers yet?

Anyway, not accurate but it’s the next best thing to have pulling around a few work cars. Old converted - modified Lionel Vulcan switchers. You can find these for around for 20 bucks. Adding chunks of metal weights inside will allow it to pull a few HEAVY RAILKING subway cars without slipping.

That engine looks really cool, not too mention your layout.

I wish and and I know it would never happen but have MTH have an all MTA catalog.  Include the LIRR, New York City subway, Metro North.  I know there are many other road names that don't get any recognition.  Just think with all of the miles of track with totally different equipment being utilized it would be pretty cool.

Hello Steve P (SIRT)

Thanks for that photo and info on that shortie MTA Loco !   That is an excellent kitbash and paint job -- and it resembles actual prototypes !  Actually, the MTA did have a few single truck GE35T Diesel Locos -- I have attached a few photos from my collection.  Again, great job on that loco !

Hello Jim Magoo

Glad you enjoyed my work train / cars photos and the MTA Work Loco model.  That Loco was a spur of the moment (after long pre-research first) fast kitbash and I did it to make a good visual representative of the NYCTA  GE45-T Loco, and I think it looks good

That suggestion will likely never happen any time soon, heh.  ALSO,  MTH lost the coveted  NYCTA /  MTA Logos license -- which LIONEL ended up receiving.  Thus MTH can no longer use actual MTA "bullet fonts logos designs" for route numbers and letters signage (they make a sort-of  generic facsimile,  but not the accurate one.)  Also they can not put MTA or TA or official emblem-logos on their NY Subway Sets.  But most purchasers of those post-MTH-lost-license sets, know how to get or computer create, their own logos for affix to their models.

Anyway, the few of us (mainly in HO and O-Scale 2 rail) have for many decades, learned how to self-create and scratch build models of what we wanted in this very tiny portion of the rail hobby.

Hello Steve

No, not a chuckle at all -- but enjoyment and admiration for your "hands-on" finished product you created.  Like I said,  it closely resembles the single truck  GE35-T single truck Locos the TA had long ago...don't know if any are around now.  I think they had 10 of them.  And you have something no one else created !

As far as MTH,  I gave up on that involvement situation. It was an interesting run for what, 13 years since 1999-2000.  As they say,  Its the economy, dude !

Generally that LIRR MP15 diesel has nothing to do with subway work trains. It's assigned to pull dead MU''s and LIRR MOW hoppers and gondolas. Plus if you model an older time period it would not fit in as it is too new.

Since the LIRR doesn't operate freight I question why it was even made. What do ya do with it?

As I take the subway to work everyday especially on weekends with the amount of maintenance that seems to be needed I often see the small NYT loco work trains.  It's amazing the amount of equipment the will use.  It might sound silly but compared to the equipment the LIRR uses and Metro north it's like as if NYT uses railking and everyone else in the family is using premiere.  Lol

I've taken an old Lionel S-1 Alco switcher I picked up for about $25 and chopped the cab down to the hood height. Still have to paint it and figure out what to do with the god-awful thick cheap handrails on either end, but it definitely has some potential.

I'm guessing those Ready Made Trains 'shortened' engines would make great project starters as well
