I need some thoughts from yall on the following.  I am currently bidding on an MTH 4-8-4 Northern 844  20-3535-1E.  This locomotive is being sold by Legacy Station.  It is a PS3.0 with very little run time.  Do any of you have this locomotive?  It's probably going to go higher than I want to go, but time will tell.  Heck, I know that MTH offers this same locomotive in a passenger set for around 1200.00.  If it bid up close to that I would be better just to buy a complete set.

There is a Lionel version on our forum (see pic), but I run DCS on my layout.  Would the Lionel be a better choice?

Personally, I would just get the new MTH set. The 4 passenger cars alone would cost you probably around $300 or so if purchased separately. That would make the brand new engine with warranty somewhere around $900. Although I am not sure of this, but the MTH warranty on the used one is probably voided because you would be the 2nd owner? Unless Legacy Station offers something in the way of a warranty?? I am not much of an ebay train purchaser, but I think Legacy Station is a reputable dealer.

Something to consider, is what era are you modeling? The MTH UP FEF-3 model is more accurate for the UP 844 as she was in excursion service until December 2010. Subsequent changes to the Wilson Blowdown Sludge Remover system have changed the appearance of 844 as she currently appears.

Now, the Lionel Legacy models, both the first issue and the current issue, are VERY accurate for the mid-1950s "regular steam era" Union Pacific FEF-3 locomotives that were up-graded with the Worthington S type Feedwater System.
