Recently acquiring this Challenger I found the speaker to be very faint. Opening the tender the speaker is flaking stuff and I think I need a new speaker. I have asked MTH and another store but have not heard back yet. It is a 16Ohm 5 w speaker Star NR-05009-01 and 231E all printed on the speaker.

go to Trainz auctions. Click on parts.
I just saw one on the Parts Express site as well!
I'll try these sites, so far I didn't find anything (yet) on Parts Express.
They just sent me an email of speaker buyouts that had that speaker.
I just went to the site now, and can't find it?
There it is. point to the deals tab and click the speaker buyouts.
Go to the page and pick mini speakers in the left headings. It was the third one over on top
2" 16 ohm speaker.
I can't post a direct link as they aren't a sponsor I believe?
Drop me an email, I have some of those speakers.
OK I did.
I'll check e-mails tomorrow looking for your reply, as I did e-mail you according to your profile.
Jeff
don't power up the train anymore as the speaker can cause your amplifier in the train to fail, wait until you replace the speaker and make sure when you solder in the speaker you get the connections on the speaker do NOT TOUCH the ground as that will blow the amp and possibly the board especially being a ps2 5 volt board!
Alan!
OK, More things I do not know in the world of electronics. Thanks.
The problem with the flaking is it gets into the coil of the speaker and shorts the windings to frame ground. The PS/2 electronics reacts badly to ANYTHING being grounded.
