You can run them "conventionally" with a Lionel TPC unit. I'm not sure if the new Legacy powermaster will operate them conventionally as well, others may chime in.
I've run MTH PS2 engines conventionally with a TPC unit and they run great. Due to the great characteristics of MTH's speed control, once under way its hard to tell they're not being run under command control.
A TPC unit allows for blowing the whistle and operating the electrocouplers. Keystroke patterns described in the TPC unit owners manual will allow access to some of the crewtalk.
