I have a MTH MT- 1105 N&W J with tender, it runs and smokes great. It whistles but not much more. The box says it can be upgraded "to full digital sound" whatever that means. Has anyone ever done this, was it worth it, and what does it cost? Ideas welcome- this is a good runner.

I could be wrong but I think the "upgrade to full digital sounds" refers to boards available from QSIndustries at that time.
If you run conventional, probably the route to take would be to pick up a PS/1 board set. You should be able to score one for around $40-50, that would give you the sounds. Obviously, there's a bit of wiring to do, but the PS/1 boards are pretty simple to wire.
Thanks for the ideas. I checked the QSI website and sent them an email- will let you know what I find out. I also checked the bay for a PS/1 board and there is one there for $69 without a sound chip. I will probably check with the famous Midge at MTH also. thanks for getting me off and running. (I hope I don't have to spend $70+ on a $100 loco!)
You should be able to find a PS/1 board with a steam chip for less than $70. Post a wanted ad here on OGR and I suspect you'll make a better deal.
MSRP for the sound chip from MTH is $30, so you'd be into that one about $115-120 considering shipping, way too much!
Maybe time for a fan driven retrofit.
