Always stick with trains rated at O-36 and below for O-36 track.  You won't be sorry later.  I tried to run a Lionel loco (Blue Comet) rated for O-42 and it's matching cars , rated for O-54 on O-42, and it would not work.

True. I really do like the scale J but the railking one really isn't too far off. What blue comet was it? Was it the one from the set with TMCC? @Bob Severin

No it is a Legacy model from 2010.  For me, it was the second most expensive single locomotive I ever purchased.

That one was close, but the actual number was 6-11423 and the road number of the loco is 833 not 832.

I think that my have been a mistake.  I believe the does states O-42 for the loco and O-54 for the cars.  It will not run, with the cars attached on anything below O-54 without derailing the consist.  The loco might run on O-36, but I don't have any and never tried it.

Ah. I actually found this one. Glad I didn't buy it.

The 1:48 J is a huge locomotive, like the real one - but the RK (NOT the "Bantam"!) version is a very nice loco and in your situation I'd consider buying it and enjoying it.

I'm surprised that MTH rated their scale one at 042; I have the Lionel scale J and it takes 054 (just looked it up). I guess those small 70" drivers on the real loco give it a short enough rigid wheelbase to be an 042 model. Must look weird, though.

I have an 072 layout so I pay little attention to minimum radius, as 072 is the de facto "runs anything" 3-rail spec.

This also can cost you a fortune..."Sure! Buy it! I can run it!"

Yep, I'll go for the railking. It's only about 5 inches shorter than the Premier unit. Now I just need to find one.
