It looks like MTH pushed back the SP Daylight GS-4s from already long awaited July 2013 to now Jan 2014??? I am very disappointed as I was excited to get the engine this summer. I don't know why they were pushed back so far. I ordered the passenger set as well and it looks like they are still due Aug 2013 but what good are they without the engine...lol

I have to see if Lionel's version already shipped...does anyone here know??? If not when is there release date?

Fred, Congratulations!  I am envious but hopefully not for long.  I would love to get one for myself.  Would it be too much trouble to ask if you could take a quick video of it?  Would love to hear it and compare sounds, chuff, whistle, bell, etc. to my TMCC version.

Again, congrats, hope you enjoy in good health.

By the way, where did you order yours and do you happen to know if they have another one available?

Lionel released their scale Legacy GS-4 Daylight a few years ago.

Overall a very nice model but it does have a couple of visual errors, one is that the Daylight "fireball" logo on the fireman's side is reversed from how it's supposed to be, and the main connecting rods from the pistons to the main drive wheels are not correct (they are borrowed from the GS-2 which used a narrower, standard-type connecting rod than the beefier, heavy-duty type the GS-4s had).  The MTH model doesn't have those two discrepancies, so the MTH model will be more accurate.

If you want a GS-4 that's an even better rendering of the GS-4 prototype then the brass version released not long ago by Sunset/3rd Rail would be the one to get.

MTH is only now starting to deliver some of the steam locomotives catalog'd as far back as 2011.  I've been patiently waiting for one of the Climax logging locos as well... also catalog'd back in 2011.

Suffice it to say... MTH ran into major supplier problems overseas.    We've heard everything from factories burning down (worst case scenario) to factories going out of business with MTH tooling locked behind closed doors to MTH focusing on European-model steam production (best case scenario).

Whichever scenario you believe, MTH went a few catalogs without steam models featured.  So it's best to expect delays while they ramp up steam production again.  But the good news is that MTH has started delivering Premier steam here in the US very recently... a couple of models at a time.  The bad news is that a six-month delay is very typical when overseas production windows are missed or other supplier issues creep into the picture.

I think that this will be the third release of this engine by MTH.  Hopefully this time they will add the front brake hose on the pilot.  Their HO vesion has the brake hoses on the pilot.

Hi Luis, please no apology as a video is exactly what I was looking for....thanks a bunch!! I'm glad you got your engine. Lionels version does look and sound great. I did noticed that Lionel still uses that tired dialog "over" "copy that" every sentence I love the engine and steam sounds though which is whats most important. I can't wait to see MTH's version of the daylight when they finally release. Lot's of luck with it and thanks again for the video post.

Thanks guys for all your comments and suggestions. I guess I'll just have to wait and see what MTH does in Jan and if it does ship then what it actually looks and sounds like. I'm sure it's going to be nice especially that they are now using 3.0 boards.

I like Lionel's version of the matching passenger cars I wonder which set I will like better when MTH ships there set due next month.

You do realize, of course, that when you get your layout built and you have all that impressive motive power on display, you're going to be in the doghouse? I'm safe for now, because mine are discreetly stored in non-descript boxes -- too many boxes.

Matthew,

And speaking of GS-2's, as the 'other Alex'  brought up and showed (above) on his beautiful layout, here is another view of the locomotive. I used it in the opening scenes, and again a bit later on my June 2013 High Definition video.

Good luck in acquiring your Daylight steamer soon, whether the long-awaited GS-4, or even the GS-2.

Remember when Fred was the lead developer of this technology .. I remember him at train shows with demos of the first remote uncoupling technology since the Lionel radio control set and visiting their headquarters to purchase modules and seeing all the development they were doing ... before the Big Two came out with similar stuff.

I've one of the first reverser units, with custom mounting plate by Fred, in my old SW1 switcher.  Always starts in forward ... for those old remote station stop devices.  Tested on the first version of the CL&W.

And the rip-off of the technology by those we won't name ...

Personally, I think the biggies screwed QSI ....
