Well, I guess it was bound to happen eventually.

My $700+ MTH Premier NYC 4-4-0...turned smoke unit on, heard the familiar fan sound but no smoke.

Added some fluid...still no smoke.

These 2 locos do not have many run hours on them either.

I wonder if the wic burnt out?

I recall reading somewhere that if you allow the fluid to run out and dry the wic out, it will fail?

Funny thing is, last time I ran it the smoke was fine....but today, when I saw no smoke after turning the smoke unit on, I turn it on and off for maybe 10 seconds total b4 adding more fluid.

if it did just happen to run out of fluid when I turned it on, is 10 seconds of on and off operation enough to dry the wic out and ruin it?

One small extra point, and please forgive me for mentioning it if you already do this, is that you should always ensure that the smoke-unit is turned off and cool before adding fluid. If the smoke unit is on, then besides the mess that may results from fluid being blown back at you, there is an increased chance of bubbles forming, and fluid directly hitting a hot resistor can result in unwanted deposits forming.
