Tom, the rock walls are all pink Styrofoam gouged out with a hot knife tool. Later, I started using an old steak knife to do the gouging. I found that the rougher texture produced by the serrated blade looked more realistic.

Great looking layout! It reminds me of the "coffee table" railroad I built a long time back. There was an article about it one of the magazines.

Thanks for sharing that layout with the gorgeous scenery, however the scenery is not accurate at all. I must call your attention to the fact that the Mott Haven Yard should be to the left of the overpass and the Grand Concourse is not even in the scene. I'm surprised at you, Jim. You're such a fantastic modeler

Great little layout,  it caught my son's attention since he is starting to go to the dark side and collect N scale stuff.  Your photos help prove to him you can build a nice layout in a small space.  Nick

You'll notice that wide open spaces ruled on this layout. If I had tried anything with more detail like our old stomping grounds in da Bronx, I'd still be cross-eyed!

 

The layout convinced me that I now have O scale eyes and fingers (and maybe a G scale mid-section )

Very nice work....I have enough Kato track to build a double mainline layout on a 3 x 6 door layout...someday...

 I think there's a key point for us in here. He switched to a serrated blade for more realistic results.

 I think a lot of layouts get the first run and done technique. We're all looking for a magic wand to make stuff easily. I think a lot of the key standard setting layouts are a product of experience and technique.

 I admire the guys who strive for the best they can deliver and won't settle for something that came out bad. I know how to do some things and yet still, on some days it doesn't flow out of my hands. I am not as gifted as most of these guys so I have to work a little harder. Getting any tips I can try, is worth gold!! Any scale has something to offer us all here.
