On May 7-8, 2016, N&W 611 returned to home rails powering a weekend of excursions out of her hometown of Roanoke, VA.  The morning trips operated east over the famed Blue Ridge Grade to Lynchburg, VA, while the afternoon trips went west over Christiansburg Mountain to Walton, VA.  These trips were repeats of the highly successful excursions one year ago over the July 4th weekend.

Nice images, but what did you do with all the people?

Here is how the Shawsville cemetery photo line looked from Stampede Pass on Saturday afternoon.013

Join photo lines, and try not to shoot in places where the people roam free.  Sometimes, that works better in theory than in practice.  In your photo, I'm somewhere just to the left of that dead-looking tree in the center (probably hidden behind the guy with the green shirt and the light-colored jeans).  We got lucky in Shawsville in that everyone basically stayed in some semblance of a line and there were no stragglers down at that lower crossing.  Anyways, I'm not good enough with photoshop to know how to remove someone, so what you see is what you get!

The other side of this is that with that many people out, you stake out your spot early, and be content with a few good shots, since there's probably no place to park if you get there late.  This was my first shot on the Saturday PM trip, despite the fact that you could fairly easily get two shots before this on any "normal" day.  It simply becomes a quality over quantity theory.

It is interesting that the local farm was not very railfan friendly (at least on Sunday)! Signs said in no uncertain terms that railfans were not welcome due to their trashy ways and towing would be enforced by John Deere". Note that everyone in the picture is in a cemetary! I had also found a lot of No Trespassing signs between Roanoke and Blue Ridge at places where there was good viewing.
