I need the help of an Ives collector.  I recently picked up an Ives consist including a 3251 Elec. Loco, and a 550 mail car, a 551 chair car, and a 552 parlor car.  Were these possibly a set makeup?  If so what is the set number?  The cars look all original but the loco may be a repaint, but a very good one.  It runs great.  Any idea of the approximate value?

I am a pre and post war Lionel collector but purchased these so I could have at least one Ives set in my collection of prewar trains.

Thanks for your help,

Jim Lawson

Jim, that's a nice 550 set, but it wouldn't have been sold with that locomotive. The 4-wheel cars were sold in sets with wind-up locos, and then also with the 3258 New Haven Box Cab-type electric locomotive, in sets like the Yankee Clipper, Green Mountain Express, White Owl - depending on color.  The Blue Vagabond set used these cars with the 1125 steam loco. In all these sets, the loco and cars were matched in color.

Nevertheless, the 3251 is an excellent size for these cars and presents well.

The 550 cars were made from the mid-teens through the end of the 1920's, in different colors and with some variations in the lithography along the way. Your dark green with the brown roofs is a nice variation to have.
