Hi all,

While these cars will not be arriving until after the First of 2015 we thought we would share some photos of what these monsters look like in person! Couple things to note about these cars;

1.) These cars, as long as they are (86' is 21 1/2"!), will negotiate O54 curves. This is accomplished by using our Kinematic couplers (like the auto carriers have) and some indents in the inside of the body            skirting.

2.) Each car comes with 70 Ton trucks that have separately applied springs and rotating bearing caps.

3.) Every car will include a pair of scale coupler draft gear boxes (which include the upper mounting spacer, coupler box (with wide throat) and coupler box cover) along with 4 mounting screws. (Photo included)      ****Customer must provide the Kadee (reg) #746 long shank couplers. ****

4.) The doors are non-operational, cast into the body. This was done so we could accurately replicate the door lock details (and not have out of scale door guides).

5.) The following details are separately applied; door locking bars, grab irons, stirrup steps, ladders, end platforms, tack boards, brake wheel, brake cylinder, triple valve, brake reservoir, brake clevis, air brake          lines.

6.) The 6- product number, built by Lionel placard is now located on the underside of the kinematic coupler guide plate (and not on the sides of the car) for prototypical accuracy.

These are also the cars that will be included in the SD70MAC Big Blue set.

We hope you enjoy the photos!

Happy Holidays!

Thanks for posting these. This shows me once again that the Lionel team does care about us and not just the bottom line. Wish I had larger curves to use these. I'm doubtful I can ever do much in scale stuff but I still get excited looking at it.  It keeps the kid in me that first fell in love with trains alive.
They would never go around traditional A-F curve track, even with the telescopic coupling system.  That's a mininum requirement for S-stuff from Lionel.

But Mr. Reagan can correct me if I'm wrong...

Lionel needs to get out and look at some S layouts then. O-54 is equivalent to 20.25 inch radius in S scale , well within the limits of most S modelers spaces. If O guys can fit in O-54 why don't they think S guys can't fit in S-41? Flyer track is irrelevant to modern S scale, just like O-27 is to modern 3 rail. Anyone wanting to buy these long cars is gonna expect to allow more room for them to turn. The big picture is an S version could fit into a smaller space than the O version so could attract more buyers eventually.....DaveB

I agree with Neal. Good Job. It's nice to see Lionel making great modern cars like this one. Can't wait for mine to show up on my doorstep

And yes Mike, we need those coupler boxes as separate sale items. I want to put them on my all my Lionel scale auto racks too!

P.S. Mike, please don't force us to by two cars when all we need is one. Doing two packs is fine, just offer them as single cars as well.

Autoracks will accept a Kadee 742 coupler mounted flush against the underside.  Drill a 3/16" hole in the middle and use a #2 screw.  No shimming or other modifications required.

You don't want to do this.  Autoracks are close-coupled together, unlike 86ft boxcar prototypes which do have an "extended reach"  coupling installation.

Hi all,

We will consider the separate sale coupler boxes. Might be a long lead time in getting these, as they are in the same tool with the door locks, don't really need too many extra door locks! The draft box adapter piece is really designed for the deck height on this particular car, and is what ultimately positions the box where it is, out from the end. Not sure it would work on other cars, as the frame has holes molded into it for the alignment, etc.

Thanks for the feedback.

Not sure what the Minimum curve for scale couplers is, the largest diameter we have here is O84. Anyone out there have curves larger than this AND has scale couplers on their rolling stock?

Thanks,

Mike
