Ok I splurged and got one of the new SD70AH’s #9096 (2033321). It arrived today and I opened it up to find some loose pieces. This seams to be our new normal. I reattached the bottom steps on the fireman side. Found a couple of paint chips (I try not to get too upset I realize this did have to come all the way from China). A loose air hose I can’t place, there is what just seams to be extra plastic coming out of the pilot. But I finally noticed the darnedest thing, on one side of the Cab in Red lettering it says SD70Ace and the other says SD70M-2. From what I’ve found it should be black SD70AH. So I don’t know what to think. Don’t want to bash and manufacture but looks another oops

Send it back and get what you paid for.
Classic Lionel. Send it back, the only way this QC stuff will stop.
zhubl,
I would just send it back...
Less serious issues with my SD70M-2. The walkway behind the fireman’s side of the cab wasn’t screwed down to the frame. And the crew is facing the rear of the rear of the unit. Not a big deal as this is a short line railroad and they may have faced backwards. I’ll probably pull the shell and turn them around.

Image spending $1800+ on a Vision Line Challenger and opening the box, only to find the pilot and tender platform loose, screws laying at the bottom of the box. I spent a month trying to track down a no.3985, and that was INDEED my first experience with what is supposed to be "LIONEL'S BEST PRODUCT". A small detail piece had also come loose off of the pilot as well. If I was in the store and looking at it with the dealer, I would have made him fix these little annoyances- I dealt with it, got it back together, and she's on the tracks- at least it runs well and the Challenger 3985 hasn't disappointed me yet.

I also had that issue but was not too worried as that pops right back in. Can you tell me what this piece of plastic is on the front pilot?

What about those white anti-climbers? On UP - they should be yellow to match the side sills.
I noticed the same issues on mine. I figured the lump on the pilot was just on my unit. The white anti climber strope was goofy but should be an easy fix. The SD70M-2 and ACe lettering on an SD70AH was my big complaint.

That’s odd that we both have that extra plastic. Is your front break hose attached? If so where? Yes the two incorrect lettering is the big downer. I could’ve easily seen the mistake of putting ACe on each side but even then at least it would’ve matched 🙃

There was a hose in the box that I haven't looked to see where it came from but if you had one loose too, who knows. One last gripe that I'll fix is the radiator grilles should be gray and not yellow.
Plastic piece on plow looks like where they cut it off the mold, but didn't trim it flush
The protrusion on the plow is where the air brake hose attaches. See pic of replacement snow plow. Also included separate pic of replacement hose. They just glue in the hole. If they break off inside the hole then a very small drill bit can bore back through.

Well that solves two questions. Thanks!
