56.

TMCC (only because i learned how to use it  and like it at the club).

LC+ (which impressed me with it's simplicity of use, and great slow speed operation).

and occasional conventional running with the big handle on the Z4000 (because I have a couple of conventional only engines) .

I'm wary of the complexity of Legacy and (especially) DCS. It's great for the computer and electronics enthusiasts, but not for me, it takes away from enjoyment of the model railroading hobby.

it's great that we have so many options, to suit everyone's enjoyment of the hobby.

75 and using DCS for MTH PS2 and PS 3, Lionel Legacy for Lionel Legacy and TMCC equipped locos and cars . DCS variable Throttle for conventional running all non command equipped locomotives and a loop with ZW control only for all non command equipped locomotives including prewar items.

Blue tooth seems interesting andi might try that soon.

Dan,

Yes I see that trend also, like me I think most of these men have been waiting for this technology all their lives, and many have invested in it.

I ran conventional trains with my brother (N and then pre-war Marx) and father-in-law (modern) but had no interest in my own layout at first.  Lionel's RailSounds made things a bit better, but it was not until TMCC was introduced that I got excited about O gauge.  Makes me wonder how many others were drawn to O gauge only after command control was introduced.

As I mentioned in my earlier post, I run command control.  I am wiring my layout to run conventional through Legacy PowerMasters but I am beginning to think that will be a waste of time and money.  Might be useful if friends bring their own conventional engines.

I wonder how different the results would be if the survey were conducted in December, in order to gather the annual/Christmas only train people's age and control preference.

At the end of February, I suspect that it is mostly diehards that frequent the forum, and thus are more likely to run a more sophisticated system.

No wonder I can't keep abreast of things around here - this thread is less than a day old and it's already a 4 pages. You guys must stay up all night.

OK - I'm 69.

I run TMCC (and a couple of Legacy locos under TMCC).

I do have a very-seldom-used DCS Remote Commander.

I run nothing conventionally, except when checking out equipment in one way or another, as when determining the basic mechanical/motor soundness of a conventional loco, with an ERR upgrade in mind.

Forgive me if someone has already asked, but doesn't HOOP.LA have the ability to provide a survey/poll feature where members can set up a multiple-choice survey, and have the results posted on a nice bar chart graphic? I've seen this type of feature on other forums, and it's a lot of fun to see trends on a lot of topics.

Painstakingly tabulating the results from almost 200 scattered, anecdotal posts, is admirable, but seems like a lot of work.

Given the interesting data, could the survey be a sticky post at the top of all of the other posts?

Hi Dave:

I have not been waiting for this all my live. Yes: it was an investment for my three children. When they were in high school, my oldest son took a strong interested in helping Dad wiring the train layout with Lionel TMCC and MTH DCS.

This interest caused him to pursue a career in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at Michigan Technological Univeristy. He now is an Automotive Engineer for a major automotive manufacture, right here in Metro Detroit Area.

He is now making over six figures, so yes this investment paid off. He still helps Dad with all the upgrades needed to keep MTH • DCS and Wi-Fi, up to date and all the trains running.

Yes, it does, but this thread was not started as a Survey, so it doesn't show up with any graphs.

If you want to start this all over again in a real survey where we can see the results, CLICK HERE.

They had to wake up to use the restroom anyway, might as well log on

I see you are only 31.  Your time will come.

Haha I'm sure it will.

I filled out the survey at the above link.  Please take a few seconds to do the same Everyone who is following this topic!!

Our discussion has been very enlightening though.  Many younger folks choose conventional as I did until 6 years ago when I was 55.  Cost was the main reason for waiting so long in my case.  Then I got some mad money and took the plunge.

47 - Conventional (postwar Lionel steam, K Line steam, MTH Proto 1 steam and diesel).  Lots of mods on the Lionel and K Line engines including ERR sound and wireless remote control of rear couplers using the small, inexpensive wireless momentary relay units readily availalbe on Amazon.   All lighting on engines and rolling stock upgraded to LED.  Interested observer of all the discussions on Command Control and DCS but still not making that transition yet based on the seemingly endless discussions on compatibility issues.
