Thanks to Ameen, we now have an idea of how we operate our trains.  If you haven't clicked on the link to his graph, you should take a look.  It's very professional.  What I would like to see is a similar graph based on age.  Is that possible ?

Dan;

I agree, Amen has done a wonderful job with this. I wish we could determine how many individuals used his survey vs. just answered her. Also, I think it would add a bit of clarity if all of the categories could be conglomerates by type of usage... for example:

  • conventional
  • Lionchief/+
  • command control (TMCC/Legacy/DCS/etc.)
  • wifi

Just my opinion...

DCS - handheld remote and Wifi

TMCC / Legacy - Cab-2 remote and Wifi

Conventional for older Williams only and occasionally Post War when I remove them from display

And I operate this way all the time, even during Christmas.

have you or do you belong to the san diego 3 railers?

No, we just moved here in September. A couple weeks ago we finally had a chance to visit the model railroad museum but didn’t get there until the end of the day on our way to a Gulls game.

Im still organizing my trains to get ready to build my next layout!

Just thought you guys would like to see what I have so far:

If you have not taken the survey and would like to here is the link: https://goo.gl/forms/CboF0q8ZvWBoI4zL2

Thanks to all who took it. I already have shared the data (excluding the names of those who took the survey) with @Dan Padova and @MELGAR. Waiting for there responses.

@Deuce I would like to share the data (with no names in it) with you but you don't seem to have an email in your profile. You can email me if you would like. My email is in my profile.

Thank you for putting together this graph.  Interesting.

Mmmm...  No.

What we have is a graph indicating how the people on this forum who chose to respond run their trains.  Does this correlate in any way with the wider community of 3-rail hobbyists?  We have no way of knowing.  No matter how much it may occasionally seem to some, the OGR forums do not necessarily represent a microcosm of the hobby world.

Like Balshis said, we don't really know. I would guess the Forum misses conventional operators who don't have computers. That probably goes together more than the command people, most of whom probably have computers they actually use.

Balshis and Mike;

I must respectfully disagree with some your comments. Dan's original question was to address how folks on this Forum operate their trains. Obviously, this site is not the entire universe of train operators, but I doubt if there is any way to capture that entire demographic. And, since the question was posed in an online Forum, you will never capture folks without computers.

With, as of this reply, 322 responses (most of which were direct answers to the OP's question), I think we have answered Dan's question on how WE run our trains. I spent too many years working with a bunch of market research digit heads and I know survey sample sizes are usually small, and I think that a sample size of several hundred would give them some satisfaction. Can you extrapolate the results to the entire demographic??? Maybe not, but since so many of the respondents seem to belong to one or more train organizations or clubs, I think that, though not provable, the results may somewhat reflect the general population.

I think that the summaries MELGAR and Ameen put together show some interesting things, and a bit more mining of the data would be most interesting (number of respondents in the results, average age of users of any one type of control, etc.). To me anyway, the biggest item of note was the prevalence of conventional operators, and how many seemed to be from the "younger" crowd - people who deal with tech all day and prefer simplicity in their leisure.

Just the opinions of a happily retired Lone Wolf

I totally agree with what Paul wrote concerning this poll. It gives a very good sample size of OGR members and that is what the original question asked. The responses given been fun to observe. I also want everyone to know that Ameen is a freshman in high school and quite knowledgeable already in many areas. He is far ahead of many of us in being so computer savvy! Great job, Ameen.

Well while we are at it, why not start again and ask.  Age, retired or working, how often we run our trains, do we have a working layout, run trains alone or with others, and are we in a operating club.  Ameen can add the info to the existing names on the spreadsheet if desired.

We might see that retired people use their trains more often and prefer electronics.  Or they mostly run with clubs and full time employed people use their home layouts more due to less free time.

Of course any trends would only apply to forum people who responded.
