I was putting some boxes in order last night and noticed a price on the side of my 1800 General set box.  It was $1648, but the 8 was smaller than the other digits and it was underlined.  No matter what kind of terms I used to search, I could get no answer as to what method this was to price an item.  Any 'old timers' out there who are familiar with this method of pricing?

In my experience in older merchandise the cents portion of an item's price may contain a variety of codes.  Store brand, season (age) of merchandise, returnability, vendor, division or departmemt of a store.

For other codes in current retail practice just google "secret codes in price tags".  Very revealing as to wholesale pricing, minimum selling price, closeout, commissions, etc.
