Somewhere between Lawrence and Topeka KS, near Overbrook, there was a family that had about 3-4 different kinds of RR cars on a bit of track on some farmland. They had turned them into a house. I always thought it was cool! Don't know if it's still there--that was about 25 years ago.

Manitowoc, is about 90 minutes (or so) North of Milwaukee on the Lake Michigan coast line.(Home to Manitowoc Cranes and large shipyard) The winters there would be more temperate since you are near the lake (warming effect in Winter, cooling in Summer).
Actually Winter here in WI this year has been very easy. The ground is white now, but its not "cold" at all.
