"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Post your non-O scale stuff here!

A lot of us are diehard modelers, but how many of us are lucky enough to boast two model railroads in our home? Tom Baughman certainly can!

A massive HO scale shelf layout with a helix has taken up Tom's entire basement since 1999, and in his office is a unique N scale layout built into a coffee table. He primarily models the steam-to-diesel transition era of the 1950's and 1960's, and while he collects from all roads, the lion's share of his fleet in both scales is from the Nickel Plate Road, which he blames on his father who worked there during the transition era. Both layouts are decked out with bucolic fall foliage scenery, a number of custom-made buildings, hundreds of LED lights, and much more.

In this video, we'll tour through both of these layouts with the empire builder himself as our guide! Hope you enjoy!

Tom Baughman’s railroads are impressive.

One thing that he and I have in common is that we have two model railroads. But since this discussion is posted in the HONGZ Forum and mine are O gauge, I won’t go into detail. Each of mine took me five years to complete.

The larger one, completed in 2004, is 12’ by 8’ and can be run with three trains at a time. The smaller one, completed in 2019, is 10’ by 5’ and models a single-track New England branchline. It appeared on the cover of O Gauge Railroading Magazine Run 304 (February/March 2019).

The 10’-by-5’ layout was a retirement project. I didn’t want to expand or dismantle the 12’-by-8’ layout so I started from scratch and built the newer railroad on the other side of the basement about ten feet away. It is modular and was designed to be easily transportable.
