Grandpa and I were just talking about this today. He graduated from Slatington in 1950, and knew many kids who rode this train. He told me that some kids would come in from New Tripoli, Kempton, and even a few from as far as Virginville. They would get off the train under the Main Street bridge (which would have had a trolley line on it in the 1920's, and the tracks remained under the asphalt until they replaced the bridge about 5 years ago) and walk to the school (where they were often late). The line then continued on to meet the Lehigh Valley.
He told me that he rode it once in 8th grade (so about 1946), and could attest that these kids were wild on that train. Then when they got off the train, some had to walk over a mile home yet (like his cousins, who he went with to go pick potatoes).
I read somewhere that this was the main money making train on this Reading branch, but I can't verify that. Also, does anyone know what coach at Kempton is the Berksie coach?
