hello. I just received my first 3-D printed structure for Christmas and now I'm trying to paint it. When I received it it was grey, and no matter how many coats of paint I use, I can't really get it to change. It seems like it's just soaking up paint. Does anybody have any tips?

Haven't tried to paint any yet, but another fellow was successful with Krylon Professional red oxide primer
I have not had a problem painting gray resin prints that have been rinsed in 99% Isopropyl Alcohol as a post-process. If there is still surface resin on the surface you need to remove it,
Then paint it with a white primer like Tamiya fine surface primer.
Unfortunately, we need more info. @AlanRail is right and it sounds like that's what is going on.
Do you know anything else about the part? What style printer it was made on? What plastic it was printed out of?
Ditto on the material that was used?
I paint PLA & PETG without issue. Sometimes I give items a wipe with acetone and I prime it (usually not). Krylon, Rustoleum Tractor Supply and cheapo Craft Smart Acrylic for brush work. I painted around 40, 8" fence Finials (outdoors, New Orleans) printed in PETG... they all still look brand new.
I've been successful using Rustoleum 2X flat white primer in a spray can with no prep on PLA. Final painting is with brushed-on acrylic paints. I've not tried any sprays.

I post-process my gray resin prints in two (2) alcohol washes before a 60 min cycle under ultraviolent light at 60 degrees F. The UV light matches the wavelength of my printer's laser.
When you buy resin prints from ebay, etc. unless the buyer specifies their post-process, you don't know if there was any post-processing performed according to the resin specifications.
