Painting lcl containers and where to buy a couple dozen loose

i wanted to buy a couple dozen lcl round cylinder/canisters loads for gondolas to have some custom lettering on. A couple questions:

1) can anyone share their experience with stripping, sanding, painting and relettering the Lionel ones?

2) I see the MTH ones list price is 2 for $15 and sites have them for about $6 each. At that rate, may just buy a new gondola w/ 4 canisters for $30. Anyone know of any stores that sell packs by the dozen? Would Lionel parts store have them.
