I remove the black coating from the top of all my AtlasO track in order to improve performance. The black coating is not as conductive as clean nickel silver and is believed to downgrade the DCS signal.

Removal of the black coating on AtlasO switches produces the copper color that you describe. I believe that the early production track used a blackening process that turned the surface of the nickel silver rail copper colored underneath.

I have found that you can grind off the copper color with a 3M abrasive pad. It takes a lot of elbow grease and I have stopped doing it.

Being a fan of clean middle rails, I would not even think about trying to restore the black coating.

I use Micro Mark's " neo lube"', it looks just like the factory finish. It does wear after a while, have not noticed any build up on the pick up rollers. The track can look shabby if not maintained with something like this, they use several different colored metals for the center rail. Try it, you will like it. Fred

Fred, that sound perfect!  Exactly what I'm looking for.  I have about 1 0 pieces that are not 'phantom black'.  Will try it out as soon as I order it.
