A couple of Pennsy's transcontinental sleepers.

The Pennsy "Imperial Terrace" 4 double-4 compartment-2 drawing room sleeper was one of two transcontinental cars that were part of the Golden State train from Los Angeles to Chicago.  Again, the Pennsy ran the cars between Chicago to NYC.  The Pennsy joined the GS in 1946 and the cars were painted the colors in the photo in 1948.  Pennsy's participation ended in 1951.  This is a Lionel 21" car.

Ron,

I really like your Lionel "Imperial Terrace".  I have the K-Line 18" version, and it just feels out of place in my otherwise scale length fleet of streamlined sleepers.  I'll have to see if I can track that one down.

A few photos I don't think I've posted before to this thread of my Walthers Kit built "Harbor Cove".  Not nearly as challenging as the heavyweight builds, but still a bit of work.  I used K-Line trucks under it with some bolster modifications and later swapped the wheels from the stock K-Line 33" wheels to GGD 36" wheels.  A big improvement.  Not as refined as a more modern model rendition of this unique car from the Broadway Limited, but I'm still pleased with it.

@GG1 4877  Jonathan, this car is part of a 2-car set, 2027590, that included Imperial Range, the other PRR car on the GS.  Since the two cars were never on the same train at the same time, I went in with another forum member to get the set.  He got Imperial Range.

Thanks for the part number Ron.  I'd be interested in both cars just because it seems I'm destined to ultimately model two passenger terminals and just transfer trains between them.

Hey guys! Thanks for the encouragement to get some passenger cars.  With my tight clearances and sharp radius (0-31 is the radius on my "main line") cars like the 21" would be too long.  I am going to look for some 15" cars which I think would work for me.  Thanks for comments.

@Don McErlean

Don:

Our layout also has O-31 curves. For years we have run MTH Rugged Rails O-27 passenger cars. They are well detailed and have interiors. They come quite a few different road names. For a varied selection of the cars from over the years, look on  "the Bay". Some of the older ones were in the Rail King line of products until MTH changed the Rail King line to be very near full scale. The smaller equipment is now under Rugged Rails.

Go into "the Bay" and paste the following text into "the Bay's" Search facility, "MTH Rugged Rails O-27 passenger cars".

@Randy Harrison and @GG1 4877  Thanks for the comments and the advice.  I am going to look for those 15" cars you guys described and see if I can't find at least a small set.

Don

Don;

Lionel put out a nice set of PRR 15” aluminum cars back in the MPC days. They still seem to be available from online sources for reasonable prices. The silver set in the pic are the PRR and the grey set is a slightly later NYC set. The cars were sold individually as opposed to a set, so you should be able to pick up as few or many as you may need. Good luck on the hunt!!!

Searching for some random PRR images I either haven't posted in a long time or something I haven't posted at all and came up with these.  All these are from 2007-2008 on my 2nd O scale layout which was one of many that never really got very far.

Have to say you have a nice fleet of GG1s Is that a layout under Constuction?

@Randy Harrison and @Apples55 - Randy, Paul thank you for the information and advice on potential passenger cars for my new PRR F-3, I am going on the lookout.  Thanks again

@GG1 4877 - Those scale length GG1's are really cool.  I just wish I had the curvature and clearance to run one.  So Im sticking to my old Lionel "shorties" for the time being.  Great photos though!

Sadly, this layout was under de-construction for more years than it was under construction.  I got started seriously on it in 2007 as an over and under two track double dog bone around the wall layout in a 15'x25' room until about 2012 when I set up a modular layout in the middle of the room and used the outside benchwork for mainly display.  It was a great lesson on how to not set up my loops.  Two 21" cars cannot pass on 072 and 080 curves and a 2.5% grade isn't ideal for the length of trains I want to run.  Now I know!     Ultimately, I dismantled it all in the summer of 2016 when my house flooded and after the repairs were complete the house was sold.  I currently don't have space for a train room.  That is the next house.

Not PRR, but the same layout looking at the back corner where the main lines went up and over the yard.  More GG1s of course :-)

Ron - remind me which way your box cab / modified train is running?  West or East?  I remember reading that P5s were not turned so the modifieds lead in one direction and the box cabs in the other.

You are mostly correct.  Safer for the crew with the modified in front, more dangerous with the boxcab in front.  Unfortunately, there were 62 boxcabs and only 28 modified (61/29 after one boxcab was rebuilt).  So a lot of trains had a boxcab in front just because there were more of them.

Back to your comment.  They did not need to turn them.  If the engineer wanted the modified in front on the way back, they would run around the boxcab to put the modified in front.  I assume it depended on the comfort level of the crew.

Since I spent my entire Labor Day weekend working on corrections and new graphics for the 3rd Rail SD7 & SD9 2nd Run, here is an image of the SD7 graphics pre-correction.  Hint, the correction is not with the graphics, and it is pretty minor.  Bonus points to anyone who can tell what the correction is.

Well I'll take a shot, has to be horns Lionel had them placed like the PW GPs, fuel tank. fans, and railings?

Nice looking diesel now let's see that bad boy run.

You are correct that it is the horns!

For PRR specifically, the Leslie S3L horn should have all three chimes facing long hood forward.  When the first run of this locomotive was done, we used the standard configuration of one chime facing opposite of the other two.  It has been corrected on this run.  This horn remained all the way through their last days serving Conrail up until about 1980.

For perspective, the SD7 and SD9 had a few factory options on horns.  One was two single chime Leslie A200s mounted on the roof rear of the cab on the long hood with one facing each direction.  The other option was the three chime S3L that is shown on the drawing above and could be found mounted rear of the cab on the long hood or centered on the cab roof.

The GP7/9 came standard with single chime Leslie A200s mounted either on the sides of the hood or one on the top of the short hood and one on the top of the long hood.  Of course this varied by railroad too.

Yes, this is how I spend my life.

As to running my trains, I would love to have time to run trains!  It seems I spend all my time in the industry now instead of it being my hobby.  I'm not complaining.  It is enjoyable in a completely different way.  One day I'll finally both the place and the time to get my collection into operation.

I just finished converting my Lionel LEGACY B6 Switcher to 3-Rail O-Scale. I may go into greater detail about how, but I followed a lot of techniques from other modelers to get it to the point it is now. I'm pretty happy how it and the accompanying M.O.W. consist turned out. The LEGACY B6 is definitely one of my best running steam locomotives in my collection.

Mikado 4501 -   Your 0-6-0 sounds and looks terrific!!!  Great job!!!   Was this locomotive originally in two rail ?     Your video is most enjoyable and your layout is fantastic!!!   The MOW train you created looks phenomenal and the B6 is a perfect engine to pull this consist IMHO!    I hope you'll  re- post this  video on this coming week's Switcher Saturday Sept. 7 edition.

The bonus points are the infinite wisdom and knowledge we all gain from being part of this esteemed forum????

What PRR videos have you found on YouTube?  It would be interesting to see some links posted here.  I don't think that violates the TOS.

It's on the TV and I use to watch them on the computer but that got old have to see what OGR says about adding to this site. Gotta say Jonathan you do got a heck of a collection. God Speed! Mark
