I am looking for information and a few photos of the mines that were around during the late steam era. Mainly any smaller operations along the railway, if there were any.

Looking to scratchbuild a free-lanced model for my layout. Of course, photo's including steam power are encouraged and welcome!

I am guessing you are somewhere east, but W. Va. certainly has had many mines

along the B&O and C&O.  Two attempts at preserving mines are west of I-75 in

southern Kentucky...near Stearns, Ky., where Barthel, Ky., with its surprisingly

simple coal mine...a shaft into a hill, with rail line right by it, has been restored,

with various camp buildings. Tourist trains by it were run out of Stearns. Also as part of the same Great South Fork Park area, another much larger coal camp reached by

a still present high RR trestle has been "preserved", but buildings are depicted by one dimension mock-ups.

Having had relatives in "Bloody Breathitt", Jackson in eastern Kentucky, the Shinbrier

photos were interesting but did not show a mine or railroad.  The Virginia Tech photos

of company stores, of which I have seen and been in only two, Stearns, Ky., and Cass,

W.V., showed quite a difference in architecture than expected. Some seem to have been designed like small town banks to present an image of prestige and permanence.

I'd be more likely to model the Shinbrier store.
