Hello everyone. Last year for my 21st birthday I went to Strasburg for the day. I toured the Pa Railroad Museum, rode #90, went to the Choo Choo Barn, and the TCA Museum. I also watched #90 and #89 run in and out of the yard. I finished by hitting some of the antique shops on my way out of town.

This year I would like to go back and do some of the stuff I missed. I want to get back in the museum, as it was under construction last year, so I missed some stuff inside, and could not figure out how to get outside. I also want to ride the train again this year, and do some railfanning away from the station. Any suggestions what else I should do?

Eat at the Red Caboose Motel in a Pennsy P70 coach refurbished as a dining car - new managers; great food.

Sleep in a caboose overnight

Next day, ride Amtrak from Lancaster to Philadelphia. Take SEPTA from 30th Street Station to Market Street East (PA Convention Center). Go up 2 escalators and watch the 13-track trainshed (the largest single-span trainshed around) unfold overhead. Go back down 1 escalator and enjoy a meal in Reading Terminal Market.

Then go to The Franklin Institute (www.fi.edu). Have a cab ride in Baldwin demonstrator 3-cylinder compound 4-10-2 No. 60000. Also see the Dead Sea Scrolls and a show in the Fels Planetarium.

I missed some stuff inside, and could not figure out how to get outside.

The yard is closed sometimes. Best to call ahead and make certain the yard will be open when you visit.

The Strasburg may have The President's Car (Reading Business Car #10) on half-hour trains. Check online or call ahead to find out when it is running.

Per Kelly Anderson (SRC Vice President of Motive Power, Equipment & Shops) on another forum,

"On another subject, the operating department recently worked out the logistics of hauling freight with steam power during the months of July and August. The plan is to use steam to bring up loads on Wednesday and Friday mornings, leaving Strasburg at 6:30 am, and returning at 7:30 am. As always the case in today's world, schedules are subject to change and the management reserves the right to substitute motive power at its sole discretion, yada yada yada, bla bla bla."
