Hopefully an easy question: Can a AHM/Rivarossi plastic steam locomotive be fitted with a seuthe smoke element? Will heat affect the plastic body? Much Appreciation!

Modern plastic diesels have smoke units

It could. Out of the kindness of my heart, I looked at the Seuthe website; see the instructions for their #22 unit [ select Details ] , which are, inter alia, in English.
Hope that helps, SZ

The heat might not affect the plastic body, but the smoke does. It will ruin the plastic.

How is it that all my diesels with smoke have been running for years with no effect on the plastic shells? Hard to imagine Rivarossi uses "special" plastic that won't withstand mineral oil!
Im with John on this one. I've never used a Seuthe unit before but I can't imagine it being any different than those made by lionel, mth, or atlas.

Are yours made of simple styrene or ABS? That old AHM/Rivarossi was just styrene.
It just won't work. The Suethe generator sits in the plastic stack, and radiates so much heat the stack melts and disformes around the generator. Maybe if you make a metal stack from brass tubing and use that to replace the plastic stack and add some heat sinks, from larger tubing on the inside that may dissapate enough heat to work.
I didn't realize the stack at the top gets that hot. I've held them after they've been running for a few minutes and they weren't that hot, but I suppose after more running that might change.
So I guess adding a smoke unit to an AHM "Casey Jones" loco is out of the question?
You will need to make a new stack from metal. I have tried adding smoke to Riverossi HO locomotives with bad results.
