Thanks for posting this. It is a fascinatingproject. Rich's photo essays have been marvelous.

Hold on Forrest! You are giving me credit for someone else's work!
The photo essays on the AOSR web site are the work of John B. Corns. John B. is a professional photographer who was the Chessie System/CSX company photographer. John works for Jerry Jacobson now and those photo essays are his work.
I just take the aerial shots and maintain the web site.
As I've mentioned plenty of times before, I love watching the progress and can only hope to one day be able to visit the site.
Now...time for the dumb question of the day.
I have no experience working on steam (other than buying a ticket or two as a passenger and/or photographer to support the operation of course!) but I have a basic idea of what is involved with the 31 day, 92 (?) day, 1,472/15 YR inspections. What is the deal with a 5 year inspection? What does it entail? Hopefully one day I can get involved with a steam operation. I would love to learn what it takes to maintain and keep these machines alive.
Very happy to see MN&F 12 on the AOS property! My Great Grandfather interchanged with the MN&F as a C&O conductor on the Lexington Subdivision. AOS is just amazing!

Not a dumb question at all, SJC. Like all standards and codes, this stuff can get confusing.
You'll likely find all the answers you're looking for here:
http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/...49cfr230_main_02.tpl
That will access the FRA's Steam Locomotive rules. The 5 year inspection, listed in 230.16, states the following:
"(2) Fifth annual inspection. An individual competent to do so shall perform a flexible staybolt and cap inspection in accordance with §230.41 at each fifth annual inspection."
If you're interested in the US requirements for operating steam locomotives, I'd recommend giving 49CFR230 a read-through. Bear in mind, however, that these are the minimum requirements.
Thanks Tim. I'll bookmark it for a later date - looks like a good and informative read.
