There's a video on YouTube of a cow having the entire front part of it's snout ripped off by a train and still living for awhile. Pretty tough to watch.
Pretty sure there was an AF cow on the tracks accessory from my youth.

So dogs aren't the only critters who like to chase vehicles! 
The opening frames reminded me of our neighbor's farm growing up. When the cows were crossing the road, you had might as well put it in neutral, because you weren't going anywhere. Then the geese started doing it too. They were more belligerent!

You are 100% correct! The accessory featured a severely over sized cow. If a train ever hit one that size, it was all over for both the cow and the train! The accessory was inexpensive and ubiquitous.
