Reminds me of the old three point turn we had to perform for the Pennsylvania State Trooper when I got my drivers license over 40 years ago. My kids didn't have to do that, nor did they have to take an oral test given by a state trooper. Scary for a 16-year old.
I see it is on the Italian island of Sardinia in a town called Carbonia. Carbonia, like carbon - coal?? Maybe...I don't know Italian. But it is very interesting, Bill!
That's called a turning star. More complicated than a wye, but takes up a bit less real estate than a turntable/roundhouse combination. Wouldn't be practical for American prototypes due to their size, but would work with the smaller European locomotives. There was a thread on this earlier. Her are the photos of a prototype, model and RR-Track rendering.
